  • So Not Okay, Shifting the Way We View Bullying With Novelist Nancy Rue

    in Lifestyle

This week on The Shift we're talking with teen novelist Nancy Rue. The issue she addresses in her latest novel, So Not Okay, is bullying in schools. Her novel is written for teenagers to see through the viewpoint of a child being bullied. We have all been there when we were growing up, but what we assumed at one point in our lives to be harmless actually torments young kids so much that they end their lives. Many people don't realize the severity of the situation and should become more aware of how their children behave towards others.  We'll discuss the issue of human kindness, how we can stop bullying and how to deal with bullying. Help us push this movement forward and stop this once and for all. Call in and ask your questions. We're also giving away a couple copies of the book to share with your teen. Follow us on Twitter @ShiftWithSkip or on Facebook here. #bullying #sonotokay

My guest for 07/23/14 is Jake Ducey.
In college on a basketball scholarship and headed for a sports career, at 19 Jake Ducey, a kid from a good Southern California family, seemed to have it all. But he didn’t. Jake felt something was missing so he decided to leave it all behind and use his savings to travel the world. What he ended up finding was that what he was looking for was inside him all the time, that our destiny is reached only if we look inside of ourselves first.
Upon returning from his spiritual adventure, Jake raised the funds to build a school and home in San Marcos, near Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, to support orphans who are taken care of by a Quiché Maya Shaman.
Now 23 years old, Jake is the author of a book titled Into the Wind, speaks throughout the country on consciously and responsibly creating our lives, and has written a new book, The Purpose Principles, which will be available in early 2015.

  • Author Jonathan Pearson shares insightful life lessons on millennials at church

    in Lifestyle

Jonathan Pearson is one of the rising stars in the millennial church leadership space.   He's the pastor at Cornerstone Community Church in Orangeburg, SC (major suburb of Columbia) and Assistant Director of The Sticks, an organization that empowers small town leaders. He's also co-creator of www.MillennialLeader.com and author of a newly-released book, 'Next Up: 8 Steps Great Young Leaders Make'. One of the most pressing shifts (and it's one he highlights in the book) I think we all believe is absolutely crucial that we make as a nation -- and more importantly, as a church -- is from entitlement to honor.  Jonathan talks about how we make that shift as leaders in our churches and homes and model it for the next generation.  He's also very in tune with the challenges the next generation of Christian leaders (many of whom are millennials) are facing as they take the baton from the giants that have led us through the last few decades and are now in the twilight of their cultural influence.   The complete list of shifts is below and, as you can see, there are a number that should really resonate with the church.  Dissension to cooperation comes to mind as we argue amongst ourselves not only about the 'non-essentials' in our own house, but publicly, about cultural issues and movements.

Passive to passionate is one that will strike a chord with a great many men.

    in Romance

Guys if you could go back in time to talk to your younger self what would you say? Our radio show is more than just making self-proclamations of being "real" men, it's a state of mind and a way of life. First and foremost, we do not hate ladies. But we cant stand the 98% of women out there who feel entitled for free drinks and dinners. Although we are brutally honest and unyielding in our views on soft males, single mothers, and mad black women, we do not promote hating or completely disrespecting women. However, we DO hate and disrespect is the never-ending BS that too many men have to go through on a daily basis when dealing with most women and society. In other words, we have no problem expressing absolute contempt towards any irrational, disrespectful, and/or unrealistic behavior or attitude that is normally portrayed by women. We are feverishly working to put an end to all of that.

  • Diversity and Acceptance Can Make Our World Happier with Connie Dunn

    in LGBT

When we are born, our DNA shapes what we look like, what our personalities are going to be, who we are attracted to, and our gender identity.
Western culture insists we are not only a heterosexual society, but also that we only have male and female, which are determined by the genitalia with which we are born. When our children begin to explore who they are at about three and four, they often begin to make gender choices.
How we treat these choices makes a difference on how healthy our children are about being who they are, even if that means they are gay, lesbian, or transgender.
    Guest: Connie Dunn
Connie's latest book, When Panda Was a Boy: A Collection of Stories on Gender Identity for K-8 helps adults learn how to communicate in a positive manner, as well as help children feel normal about their gender explorations and choices.
    Host: Lucinda Curran
Join us as we discuss this "controversial" topic - but one that would ease the path of many who feel that they were born into bodies that didn't quite fit who they really are.

Terryl Ebony, Parent Life Coach and Author   is the Founder and Director of Misunderstood Youth Development Center in based in N.Y.  She is also the Author of Losing Love, having Faith and Finding Hope. Terryl's life's  work  centers around trying to ensure that parents and children are on the right track to functionality. She understands that in every family there will issues related to the growth and maturity of our young people but she also understands that those issues don't have to cripple us. They don't have to separate us and they don't have to put us in a position where we lose love, faith and support for one another as far as family goes. She understands that if the parent is educated better in the ways of schooling, positive interaction, values and upward mobility that they will pass that onto their children. It's hard to dispute that when children display behavioral problems in school as well as in the streets that there are usually some issues going on at home that need to be addressed. Terryl Ebony helps these parents to be able to combat these issues with their children so that family services can be avoided. So that the blame game can be avoided. So that incarceration can be avoided. So that funeral services can be avoided for our youth. She has done this for years and is well respected and revered in the state of New York as well as nationally and she will be coming on the show this Wed. to bless us with some good conversation, some good parenting advice and to kick it with us. She may possibly drop a poem or 2 as well. Who knows?
