We'll listen to some music and talk about The Everyone Orchestra, Chris Haugen’s SeaHorse Rodeo and the numerous bands that these band members are a part of. The show will also feature announcements posted at Listen & Be Heard Network Arts News, some storytelling, some arts editorializing, and calls from listeners with thoughts to share and arts announcements. At the start of the show I was joined by Listen & Be Heard Theatre Critic Maria Vrobel, who talked about some alternative holiday shows around the Bay Area of California. I spoke about my poem about the Federal Reserve, which someone lifted and put at stopthefed.org without my permission, and I also read the poem. We heard from Russ Golata in Florida, with some announcements and a poem. I played my weekly editorial from my arts news TV show, which was about looking around and making use of what we already have. I also shared a couple arts opportunities. At the end of the show I read some poetry from three different chapbooks published by Listen & Be Heard, "Infinite Love Poem", "Environmental Terrorists" and "a little book of odes."

My featured guests were Armando from Armando's in Martinez and Maria Billingsly from the Martinez Opera. Among other things I learned that the Martinez Opera is about two hundred years old, and has an educational program that brings opera to very young people and also the elderly. We also spoke about what's going on in downtown Martinez, California and what it takes to keep the doors open for live music at these venues. I made some arts grants announcements, and played "Einstein's Mind" a story I originally recorded live on WBAI Radio about 10 years ago. At the end of the show Bill Vartnaw called in from Petaluma California to announce a reading with Q.R. Hand jr. in Sausalito on Wednesday night.

The poetry festival takes place in Berkeley, CA from noon-4pm. This event was started by Robert Hass when he was U.S. Poet Laureate from 1995-97. It is a joint effort of Ecology Center/Berkeley Farmers' Market, Poetry Flash, and EcoCity Builders. We will also be joined by poet Chris Olander, a performance poet and arts educator, who will be leading the Saturday morning Creek Walk in Berkeley. At the very top of the show I played my poem "King Leopold," ten verses I wrote after reading "King Leopold's Soliloquy" by Mark Twain. William Sawyer called in with another poem for children. My featured guests were Jeannette McCree-Goudeau. Owner of the McCree-Goudeau gallery in Vallejo, Ca she is currently exhibiting photographs by Tony Gleaton, among other artists, on the theme of "The African Legacy in Mexico." Tony Gleaton also joined us, who has a photography book of the same name, and Ale Chano. Ale is from the Costa Chica region where Tony travelled to take photos. He will play guitar at the closing reception for the exhibition on Thursday. He spoke on discovering his own African heritage. I played another historical poem about Queen Boedicea. Russ Golatta called in again from Florida with a poem and announcement about the publication of a poetry book to benefit arts education in Florida. I played some arts opportunity announcements about a public art project in Washington DC, a call for art in El Cerrito CA, and an international Film and Water event. Bill Vartnaw called at the very end from Crockett, CA with a poem, and I also played a remix of "Living It" from Liquid Sound Lounge records. Last night's Radio Hour started with a poem dedicated to my mother, who is undergoing surgery this week, entitled "Belated Mothers Day" from the CD "Living It." It features a soundtrack by Cooper-Moore and upright bass by Bobby Vidal. That was followed by "El Flaco" from the CD "Celebrando 20 Años" by Edgard Cambón and Candela. http://www.cdbaby.com/all/edgardo. Edgardo called in and gave out all the information about his appearance with his band Candela at Yoshi's San Francisco. He also gave out some wisdom about keeping a band together for two decades, some history on the cuts from this salsa CD "to make you dance and think." Calling from Sonoma where he was about to play a gig, he also spoke about his mentor Ruben Blades. We heard from Michaela Sefler calling in from Canada with some poetry. Kim McMillon called from Oakland and shared a fairy tale about love. Russ called again from Florida with some local poetry announcements and a poem. And then, on the half hour, we heard again from the Metaphysical Muse, who shared some advice for the coming week and the poem "Love Must be Free." Matu Feliciano called in from Oakland with "True Buddhahood lies in Activity." I played a little of "Yo Vine a Bailar" also from Edgardo and Candela, and spoke on my editorial "Arts and Politics." The show featured a call for bloggers from Culture Unplugged, a call for art for a public art project in Florida, some art exhibitions, a teen poetry slam in Vallejo and live music events around the Bay Area. Raymond called in from UpSurge, a poetry/jazz group appearing at Anna's Jazz Island in Berkeley. We talked about the group, making a CD independently and I played a cut from their CD Chromaotology called "Abbey's House." The Metaphysical Muse also called in with a poem and some metaphysical advice for the week. Russ from Florida also called with some information about poetry events and a poem.

September 30 show didn't go exactly as planned. There were some announcements of opportunities posted at L&BH Network Arts News http://www.listenandbeheard.net/artsnews, including calls for submissions of writing and photography. The international writers residency didn't get mentioned. The deadline is a ways off though, so I'll mention it next week. The profile of Howard Wiley and his music from the "Angola Project" also did not get aired, but his music is the everlasting kind, so it'll still be good news next week. I did play a segment of "Mission of Love" a serial radio drama, and I also played some poetry, "Unnamed Flower" and "New York City Blues." I spoke with the Metaphysical Muse, Tony Mims. He had a poem about numerology and gave out some good information about the coming week. I played a story about an ancient African queen called "Mella" and at the very end Mariquita called in with a poem for her man, a hot poem delivered in Spanglish to use a word I've been hearing lateley. I also will be featuring a poem and very short story of the week. I welcome submissions of same for future shows. It would be great to get some interesting calls tonight! None of us created the world we were born into. We didn't get to decide what kind of talents we were born with either. You could argue that those of us who have chosen to create art in all its myriad forms, were destined to be creative artists. Or you could argue that anyone who spends the majority of their time "working" on things that don't generally turn a profit, is not fulfilling their destiny, just crazy. What's the point? Why do you put enormous energy into pulling off yet another theatre production? Why do you shell out more money for more paint supplies? Why do you keep going to poetry open mics or writing books that never make it to the New York Times bestseller list? Surely it's not for the money.

I've been thinking about money lately. Who doesn't think about money whether they want to or not? Those printed pieces of paper that are only worth something because we are told they represent worth, they cause a lot of heartache either way. If you have too much it transforms the people around you. If you don't have enough your life can become a tragedy. This system that we were all born into here in America dictates that if you are ambitious about producing and presenting big arts projects you will have to go out with your hat out and ask people, companies, corporations and governments for money, because your work will not have any dollar value on its own. It's time to get away from all that and find a different way to manifest what must be expressed.

Back in the nineties I wrote a few grant applications for a not-for-profit that required many hours of preparation, and gave no assurance that there would be a reward at the end. Many not-for-profits operate solely on budgets with strings attached to foundations and other charitable entities. The arts are nothing but a charity in the United States. Few public school children get any kind of arts education these days. Even less people even seem to care. But I care. And if you've read this far, you care too. It occurred to me that one thing we can do as a group is begin to think about ways to operate without money, or beyond money or even in spite of money.

Last week I brought up the idea of an international event on the scale of the Olympics, for the Arts. Now I know this is a far stretch, but can you imagine if it could be mounted without any corporate funding? Could it be done without asking anyone for money? Maybe, maybe not. I do know that it would take cooperation and creativity. When we talk about a concentration of power, we are usually referring to a concentration of resources which a few people have control over. They're the ones who get the lion's share of the money that's in circulation. What do artists have? The power of creativity. Creativity is a great resource or renewable energy. It's also the thing that can get us out from under the boot, and elevate the artist to an appropriate stature in society.

Dana Teen Lomax is the author of Curren¢y (Palm Press), Room (a+bend press), and the co-editor of Letters To Poets: Conversations About Poetics, Politics, and Community (Saturnalia Books, 2008). She is working on Q, a series of home movies about raising a daughter on prison grounds, and on a book of poems with the working title Shhh! Lullabies for a Tired Nation.

Bill Vartnaw was born and raised in Petaluma. He moved to San Francisco and established Taurean Horn Press the following year, 1974. To date, Taurean Horn Press has published fourteen books, including his own In Concern: for Angels (1984). THP published 13 issues of OR magazine from various Bay Area Open Readings & 2 issues from Folsom Prison Poetry Workshop, 1976, before he collapsed. Bill received M.A. in Poetics from New College of California, 1991. His work has appeared in various literary magazines over the last 35 years. Co-edited with Geri Digiorno, Petaluma Poetry Walk Anthology/Ten Year Anthology in 2007. Suburbs of My Childhood is expected to come out in 2008 (Beatitude Press).

Olivia Johnson is an inspiring single mother who resides in Oakland California. Her life experiences from childhood to adulthood have strengthened her spirit to never give up even though life dealt her a bad hand. She hopes that her personal thoughts and poems can help those with similar experiences strive to be successful even though they feel forgotten. Her advice is simple: Rise to the top and strengthen your individual spirit. Take the negative examples, and use them as tools to build a palace of success that will shine from the mountaintops. Life isn’t always kind and sometimes it takes a harsh tone from within to move us into the right direction in life. Thanks, Olivia.

Gerald Schwartz, who has studied with Irish-American poet John Montague,as well as with Joseph Brodsky has worked in collaboration with the performance ensemble Solomons Ramada,( now Faking Trains) as well as with The Maud Baum Dance Company, drummer/percussionist Mike Lopez and sound-designer/guitarist Damian Catera. Work out or forthcoming in Northeast Corridor, North Dakota Quarterly, Poetry Salzburg (AUS), The Skald Review(Wales), FLIM and POTEPOETZINE (on the Web). In 2001 he represented the Adirondacks by climbing Mt. Marcy and reading his poem Rondeau as part of the Poetry On The Peaks program for the United Nation's International Year of the Mountain. His multimedia work, consTELLations, was performed in Chicago 2006 at the International Conference on the Inpiration of Astronomical Phenomena as part of the Adler Planetarium's 75th Anniversary. He also reviews for RAINTAXI, Web Del Sol and Jacket on the Web. His ONLY OTHERS ARE: Poems was released in 2003 by LEGIBLE PRESS (NYC). WORLD was released as a chapbook by Furniture Press in 2004, (Baltimore). He has work included in Under The Rock Umbrella: Contemporary American Poets 1951-1977 (Mercer University Press, fall, 2006). Our features for the first two rounds on the 19th are DDE, Don Hagelberg, Alicia Jones and Adam Gottshalk.

DDE is a 24 year old poet currently stationed in Germany who has been writing since the 9th grade. What started as a one month anniversary gift for a girlfriend has now been a great source of pride. Always writing about his personal experiences or feelings on issues, much of his poetry can be related to by many people from many backgrounds. Although only performing in coffee shops in the states, in Germany he has been a part of a small comedy/poetry group at the military posts in the area that he works at, as well as being invited to several slams in Germany. “Forward and up, the only two directions I know how to go”

Alicia Jones: I am currently 24 yrs. old. and I have two grown men ages of 4 and 5. I love them with all my heart everything I do is for them. Originally from Lubbock, Tx but I currently reside in California. . All my life I am a live walking, talking, big beautiful ebony individual and proud of it. Poetry is my passion, my enjoyment, a fantasy into another world. I have been writing since I was in the 7th grade. I get emotional, explicit (with still good taste), erotic, sad, joyful, etc. I believe in making people feel my words and see an image.

DON HAGELBERG participated in the 1960’s Civil Rights movement. While manager of San Francisco’s The Precarious Vision Coffee House, he co-wrote AN ARTISTS LIVING COOPERATIVE helping to promote Communes. Imprisoned in 1964-1965 for refusing induction, he never seemed to be able to complete any college course with satisfaction unless it was Creative Writing. He created and hosted LIVE POETS, a two-hour radio program broadcast on a Bay Area listener-supported radio station in the 1970s. A founding member of the BAY AREA POETS COALITION, he edited their first monthly publication, POEMPHLET, later re-named POETALK. In 2000 Don asked the BBC that they broadcast THE KALEVALAin English. They did: in installments. The broadcast pleased him because many international listeners heard the epic poem.

Adam Gottschalk lives in Portland Oregon, his favorite American city outside of New York, which is his hometown. He has been writing poetry and performing spoken word for more than 20 years. His poetry has appeared in several literary journals; he was a featured performer at the 1998 Seattle Poetry Festival and the 2001 St Petersburg Times Festival of Reading. Adam is also a brutal editor (for hire), a playwright, a graphic designer (of some 12 years), a trained singer, and is on his way to becoming a professional natural perfumer. Adam considers natural perfumery his final frontier as an artist. Adam is never ever satisfied (except with food).

The first Listen & Be Heard Open Mic Radio Show - Jul 30,2008

The first portion of the show will feature poets who signed the open mic list ahead of time at Listen & Be Heard Poetry Cafe Blog (http://www.listenandbeheard.net/home). This will allow me to collect a bio, a picture and a poem if you wish that I can feature on the web page about the show ahead of time.

You will have a chance to participate in two rounds of open mic. The first round will be the traditional Listen & Be Heard lightning round. You will have thirty seconds or less to read a poem. This allows all the poets to be heard right at the beginning. I will then go to the second round when each of the featured poets will have five minutes to read a poem or selection of poems, and make an announcement about your book, cd, upcoming appearances or whatever.

If you want to be a featured poet in the open mic please sign the open mic list and I will get in touch with you by e-mail.

After each of the featured open mic poets have read, I will open it up to listeners who have just tuned in to read one poem.

I spent about ten years as a radio producer and host at WBAI Radio Pacifica in New York City in the 1990's. I'm looking forward to getting back into radio via the internet, and thank you to BlogTalkRadio for the opportunity!
