Sarah Palin And Her Outrageous Rape Kit Policy By Bonnie Erbe Sep 18, 2008 E-Mail Story Print Story Sphere Share Text Size: A A A (US News) Mountains of controversy are swirling around Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's strange policy of forcing rape victims to pay for their own rape kits while she was mayor of the now-infamous town of Wasilla. The most interesting take I've found is posted by Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore who relates the following: I sat with a rape victim during the "harvesting of evidence". Mascara smeared eyes stared blankly out from a cave of shame. "We've got swimmers," announced the forensic tech in the lab next door. My friend didn't look surprised. In her 60's, she was still asked if she felt the need for emergency contraception. Surviving the process would have only been compounded and made worse with an itemized bill; victimized twice courtesy of Sarah Palin and the city of Wasilla. Much can be learned about the Palin Administration's family values from reviewing their spending priorities. Former Chief of Police Irl Stambaugh included forensic rape kits (up to $1,200 per kit) in his budget requests. He was fired by Palin in 1997. In her termination letter, Palin wrote, "...I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla. Therefore I intend to terminate your employment... " Staumbaugh headed the police department since it was created in 1993. Before that, he served 22 years with the Anchorage Police Department rising to the rank of captain. Sarah Palin hired Charlie Fannon as the new Wasilla Chief of Police and said it was one of her best decisions as mayor. Fannon eliminated the forensic rape kits from the budget. Though the number of rapes weren't reported, Fannon claimed it would save Wasilla taxpayers $5,000 to $14,000 a year. Palin supporters ought to be taking a much closer look at her record on these types of issues (charging rape victims for evidentiary examinations so their attackers can be brought to trial) than whether she can juggle five children and the vice presidency. This, more than anything, should push women, pro-life and pro-choice, away from the McCain-Palin ticket. It's one thing to oppose abortion on moral grounds. It's quite another to charge crime victims for their own forensic examinations. Such a policy is nothing short of outrageous.

CBC FOUNDATION PRESIDENT REMEMBERS THE REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ON THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH WASHINGTON – Elsie L. Scott, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), today reflected on the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on the 40th anniversary of his death and the Foundation’s efforts to continue his good works. “There has been much progress in America since Dr. King’s untimely death – and yet our nation still has so far to go,” Dr. Scott said. “The progress is that we have many more African Americans who are in positions of power in public office, Corporate America, entertainment, etc. We also have many more African Americans in the middle class. However, the African-American poverty rate is still more than 20 percent. It is also important to remember that Dr. King’s focus at the time of his death was heavily on economic justice. He was in Memphis to support the rights of sanitation workers and he was planning the Poor Peoples Campaign for Washington, D.C. Sadly, that part of his dream has not been realized. Like Dr. King, the CBC Foundation’s mission and programs are aimed at reducing societal disparities. On this the 40th anniversary of his assassination, we want to remind everyone, especially the nation’s policymakers, that there is still an unfinished agenda.”

In the last decade, countless revisionist scholars have followed in the footsteps of John Dittmer and Charles Payne in the pursuit of creating a more complete and complex narrative of the black freedom struggle through historically grounded local studies. Placing local people at the center of civil rights history rather than at its periphery forces the myths of the movement to crumble. Local studies demonstrate that non-violence coexisted alongside self-defense in the South and throughout the nation. They reveal the role women played as local organizers alongside men who missed the spotlight as national mobilizers. Finally, local studies implode the notion that the civil rights movement took place only in the South between 1954 and 1965 and challenge the sharp dichotomies made between civil rights and black power. The goal now is to connect the local, the regional, the national, and when possible, the transnational. Local people from all over the nation drove the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign (PPC)—the first truly national, multiracial anti-poverty movement. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) built Resurrection City—a temporary shantytown of plywood A-frame houses on the National Mall—to display the appalling living conditions endured by the poor and provide a home base for daily protests at various government buildings. But the nine regional caravans that transported the multi-racial coalition of the poor to the capital connected local movements with the national campaign in Washington, D.C. The caravans enabled local people to place their individual needs in a national context and recognize the systemic roots of their poverty. This presentation focuses on the most dramatic of the nine regional caravans, the Mule Train—a caravan of approximately fifteen mule-drawn covered wagons—and Marks, Mississippi, the small Delta town that served as the launching pad for the Mule Train and the PPC. Caravanning to the capital as a moving political theater, the Mule Train enabled participants to perform the limits on poor people’s mobility—both economic and physical. Cultural geographer Tim Cresswell argues that mobility is a site of ideology construction that often invokes contradictory meanings, since it has meant freedom and opportunity for some and shiftlessness and deviance for others. This analysis considers how representations of the Mule Train and its participants fall along racial, class, and gendered lines and how the caravan used mobility as a form of political resistance. The participants’ courage to endure the long and arduous journey and protest in Washington challenges culture of poverty depictions of the poor as lazy and apathetic. Drawing on interviews with Mule Train participants and SCLC archival materials, this presentation demonstrates how the PPC transformed one Delta community and its residents and considers how representations of and memorials to the Mule Train have affected perceptions of poverty nationally and people’s experiences locally. Connecting the past with the present and concentrating on the process of organizing rather than evaluating whether or not the PPC succeeded in meeting its goals, can help us understand what motivates people to join social movements and how they effect participants’ lives. To: U.S Senate We the undersigned strongly, and adamantly oppose House of Representatives Bill 1955, and Senate Bill 1959 Titled Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorist Act of 2007. This Bill if passed into law considering its loose language, and ambiguous definitions or lack thereof could very easily be used as a tool to diminish or abolish the rights, freedoms, and liberties that we inherently have under the U.S Constitution. This Bill as We The People see it, poses the greatest threat to the Constitution to date. The Bill lacks a definition for “extremist belief system”. It further lacks a definition of “force”. If passed as is, this Bill made Law could leave interpretation to the government as they see fit to interpret. It would give the government the right to target any group as terrorist based or any person as a terrorist. If made law it would give power to the government to breach or completely take away our right of freedom of speech regardless of the section that declares there will be a division set up to ensure our rights are protected. We oppose strongly the proposition of self policing this commission. The ambiguous language in this Bill negates the declaration of insuring our rights , liberties, and freedoms. We the people strongly, and adamantly oppose the language in the Bill regarding the Internet. The Internet is a great means of expression of our freedom of speech, and this avenue must be protected. If this Bill were passed to Law it would give the government the right to censor, restrict or abolish it all together. We the people demand that this Bill be thrown out of the Senate, and dropped. There are sufficient laws, and statues in place to insure groups that should be targeted as terrorist are. They will have the opportunity for due process under the law. Sincerely, THE POOR PEOPLE'S CAMPAIGN INC MR JERRY ROBINSON PRESIDENT
