This week my guest is songwriter, musician and producer Jay King. There was a time when the soul music had distinct sounds depending on where the musicians were from and or what their influences were such as the Motown sound, the Stax sound, and Philly International. Places like D.C., Minneapolis, Dayton, Chicago, all have a place in the musical legacy of Soul music. My guest this week is responsible for a sound of music that hailed from the bay area of Northern California and seemed at first glance to come from nowhere back in the day. The groups Timex Social Club and later Club Nouveau as well as a style of dance, sound good, feel good music came on the scene in the mid 80's and only added to the often overlooked influence of Northern California on soul music. Club Nouveau's version of Lean on Me is as classic as the original. Jay K' had a unique kind of music and by that I mean it was the universal message in the music as well as the dance tunes that would instantly fill a dance floor. While we all can recall a Marvin Gaye 'What's Going' on or MJ 'Man in The Mirror' for a broad context, It was the look at the everyday things which we all go through individually that Jay King and his groups made popular and became forever part of his musical legacy we recognize here on the Soul'. Hits like Rumors and then later, Jealousy, Situation # 9, Why you Treat Me So Bad, are all from the pen and soul of my guest. Jay King is more than just another talented producer/songwriter from yesterday as you will discover in this weeks conversation. Himself a host on BTR, Jay is candid, honest, raw, perhaps even controversial in some of his perspectives. Jay is also a true humanitarian in that he sees where we could be and should be when it come to love and understanding. We'll get into the mind and soul of Jay, talk about his NEW music, his experiences in the music biz' and some of his thoughts on some current events. Join me this week as we welcome Jay King to the SOS.
