Jamaica 'Out of Many One People'

    in Culture

Tonight Backyardlabrish will revisit ‘Intercultural Relationships' featuring Vanderbilt University's Associated Professor of English Dr. Ifeoma C.K.Nwankwo, author of 'Historical & Contemporary Perception & Portrayals of Jamaica in the US’.
This interesting broadcast explores the challenges sometimes faced by Jamaicans from the 'Out of Many One People' society migrating to the USA in the 40s, 50s & 60s..
Colonial Jamaica was a racial melting pot of people from different races and cultures becoming 'Jamaicans'. Seperation was not by color but by class, making it difficult for a Jamaican to feel or behave like a second class citizen of any other country.

    Meet Dina Proctor

    in Lifestyle

September 2008 found me in the darkest place of my life. Everything looked great on the outside - living on my own apartment in the perpetual summer of Santa Monica, making good money in a stable job - but not even my closest friends knew I was profoundly depressed that I planned my own suicide and was hopelessly addicted to alcohol. I felt like I'd tried everything - moving from job to job, place to place, boyfriend to boyfriend - and nothing worked. Depression groups, individual therapy and medications helped for a short while but I always ended up more depressed than when I started. After awhile, alcohol was the only thing that soothed me, and if this was how life was going to be forever more, I just wanted out.

Quite unintentionally I ended up in an addiction recovery program for a year that literally saved my life. One of the first things my coach in the program instructed me to do was to sit still and meditate for 20 minutes every morning. Well, I'd never been able to meditate before and I doubted that just "sitting still" would accomplish much of anything. Plus detoxing on alcohol and not having my self-soother anymore made it quite impossible for me. But I had no other option so I tried my best, and though I couldn't sit still for 20 minutes, I found that I could be relatively motionless for about three minutes, and I could do this about three times a day. (This is what evolved into my current 3x3 meditation practice that I teach all my coaching clients.)

I Know Who I Am! with LaTersa Blakely

    in Lifestyle

LaTersa Blakely manages more than newborn novelty items, as owner of LaTersa Blakely Enterprises. LaTersa’s commitment to providing women with encouragement stems from an ability to persevere through her own obstacles.
LaTersa began her entrepreneurial journey in 2010 as a result of motherhood, where she stayed home to provide 24/7 supervision to her children. The result: LaTersa Diaper Cakes, a unique way to showcase baby diapers — resembling wedding cakes, with cake-like multiple layers of diaper tiers.
Her work has earned recognition for more than the actual product, however. Women in search of their own work-from-home solutions became drawn to LaTersa’s work ethic. This prompted the launch of her book — and eventually a movement — From Brokenness to Greatness, “to teach women how to live beyond their past and step into their greatness.”
Today, LaTersa leverages almost five years of experience to provide an expert’s point-of-view when it comes to women empowerment. This includes authoring the book, From Brokenness to Greatness, scheduled to be released August 10, 2012, co-authoring From Corporate Office to Home Office, and the From Brokenness To Greatness 9 Step Transformation Home-Study System.
