    Date / Time:

    Who am I?

I've lived in a Republican household, my parents are Republicans, and I was raised Republican. It's kind of being Irish Catholic! As I matured and started to question why we chose what we chose, I had it explained to me. I have to admit though that when I was explained to me the differences of what existed (Republican vs. Democrat) I chose Republican when it was come time to vote. When I turned 18 and filled out my forms, I registered! I believed in a party that didn't want to raise taxes for programs to fund underprivileged people. I didn't want a party that was interested in taking care of people that couldn't take care of themselves. That's pretty much what it boils down to; when I work, I want my money to go into my pocket.

As it turns out the further and further we move away from the time I registered, you can't really determine who is and who isn't a Republican. Some Republicans act like Dems, some Dems act like Republicans. Earlier this year when they started doing the whole "In-Decision '08" I started to examine where I wanted my vote to come. I know, I know, I'm one that still holds faith in the system, what can I say? I know it doesn't work, I'm not sitting here kidding myself.

An internal examination of where I wanted my country to go, and seeing where it is greatly saddens me. We (and from here on in, it will mean all of government, not just one party) are failing ourselves. We are focused too much on crap that does matter. I feel that government has just grown beyond what it was supposed to be intended to do. Our forefathers believed that the Federal government should have limited power, that's why they enumerated SPECIFIC acts for CONGRESS! The Constitution (which I hope some of you still know of it) limits the power of Congress. It even says in the black and white letter of the parchment, that whatever isn't listed in the Constitution is reserved for the states. It worked for a while, almost 200 plus years, but now Congress has completely forgotten that document which our forefathers fought and died for.

Here's a situation which demonstrates what I'm getting at. There are 50 states in the Union, some states had different BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) Limits. New Jersey for a long time had 0.10. Congress decided to come in and say "Hey, look, if you States out there don't change it to 0.08 we're not going to give you Federal funding for roads." So what happened? The states got bulleyed into changing their limits. Let's not turn this into an argument about drunk driving, it's wrong, it shouldn't be done, but this is just one example.

Now what happens? Who do I vote for? Both parties are soft, lack balls, direction, and neither one really has any principal. I guess they really are politicians! I was watching the Colbert Report a few weeks ago and he had a guy named on by Bob Barr. I wasn't really watching TV, I just had it on in the background for light and noise! I was listening though and Barr made complete sense. Barr used to be a Republican according to Colbert. As a matter of fact Barr was a Congressman from Georgia! He was a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Government Reform Committee, and a member of the Committee on Financial Services. Here is a man that believed in the same principals I believed in. However, he separated himself from the GOP and became the front runner for the Libertarian party.

Finding that it was difficult for me to abandon the GOP, I had to do some research. Was this person someone I could put my trust in to run my country? Was this person going to hold the values and ideals that I hold dear? What is he going to do? Is he going to do a better job? Is he going to put this country back on track? What are the ideals of the Libertarian party?

In order to answer these questions I decided to do some research and for six weeks, give or take, I read a few books, scoured some sites on the net, and came to the general conclusion that this is truly where my ideals lie. I believe that government is too big, that states are COERCED, that I should be able to do what I want, and where I want on my own property. I believe in their core principles:

"Libertarians believe that being free and independent is a great way to live. We want a system which encourages all people to choose what they want from life; that lets them live, love, work, play, and dream their own way. The Libertarian way is a caring, people-centered approach to politics. We believe each individual is unique. We want a system which respects the individual and encourages us to discover the best within ourselves and develop our full potential. The Libertarian way is a logically consistent approach to politics based on the moral principle of self-ownership. Each individual has the right to control his or her own body, action, speech, and property. Government's only role is to help individuals defend themselves from force and fraud."

Liberty is a political conception, it was devised hundreds of years ago by our forefathers, and quite possibly even before them. Only when an individual has the ability to act how he or she wants free from coercion of government will we have the society our forefathers dreamed of.

    I am a Libertarian....
