Real American conservatism seeks to conserve the timeless principles enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution for these United States. It may be Classical Liberalism, but not European. What are the principles of conservatism and can we apply them today? Can conservatism win elections? Can conservatism restore the Republic? Yes, yes and yes, but not if conservatives identify conservatism with Republicanism or even with a monolithic ideology. Russell Kirk wrote:
“Being neither a religion nor an ideology, the body of opinion termed conservatism possesses no Holy Writ and no Das Kapital to provide dogmata…it would be well...to use this word “conservative” as an adjective chiefly. For there exists no Model Conservative, and conservatism is the negation of ideology: it is a state of mind, a type of character, a way of looking at the civil social order.”
To restore the American Republic we must learn how to be conservatives and apply the lessons of the past, our tradition of liberty, to the 21st Century. This is not the work of government, a political party or even a Tea Party or Liberty Movement. It is the work of individuals working together in society, respecting our differences and furthering our common interests without becoming Utopians, reactionaries or radicals. If you want to see America flourish conserve an ordered liberty with minimal government.
Tyranny is assured UNLESS liberty-loving people can set aside their differences and band together against the rising tide of statism. Grassroots conservatives and libertarians MUST work together to ensure the restoration of constitutionally limited government. To stop the statists in both parties, you have to win the argument and elections. Be Liberty’s Thunder!
