Interview On 4/29/09 With George Feder - Former Jewel Thief/Professional Burglar

For more than 20 years George Feder was a master jewel thief.  He wasn't your run-of-the-mill burglar who gained entrance to dwellings by reaking down doors with a sledge hammer.  He was a professional with finesse and aplomb, who took the craft of lock picking to the level of fine art and could breeze through any security system without breaking a sweat.  He ability to maintain his cool and get the job done under the most stressful conditions earned him an underworld reputation as the best jewel thief in the United States.

George will be talking about his experience as a professional burglar, jewel thief, and being part of the "wise guys" in his neighborhood.  We'll learn about his life during that time, during the time he was eventually caught, and how his life is today.

What advice does George give to condominium owners and everyday homeowners about keeping their home and family safe?  Join the show to learn all these things and more.
Show starts at 6:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, 4-29-09.  You can either listen online at www.blogtalkradio.com/letstalkhomesecurity or listen via your telephone at (646) 727-3396.

Cheryl Watterson will interview Lt. Bruce Barnes, Noblesville, Indiana Police Department Public Information Officer on Lets Talk Home Security Radio, 04-22-09.

Lt Barnes has served in the US Army, Army Reserve and has worked his way through the ranks of the Noblesville, Indiana Police Department serving as patrolman, corporal, sergeant, and his current rank of lieutenant.  He also graduated from the FBI National Academy in Washington, DC - one of the top executive leadership academy's.

Join the program as Lt. Barnes discusses Residential Security Inspections for burglary/theft prevention for your residence.  More and more home burglaries are happening and one reason is homeowners have become lax in their overall home security.

When you leave your doors unlocked whether you are asleep or away from home, you are inviting strangers/intruders into your home.  Make security a habit!

This is the time for reiterating basic home security awareness.  Building solid home security habits will help homeowners keep their home well-protected and their family safe 24/7.

If A Violent Home Intruder Is Breaking Into Your Home - Do You Shoot To Kill Or Just Mame The Guy?

    April 15, 2009 - Courtesy of WDBJ7.com
UPDATED: Investigators name intruder killed in Botetourt County, no charges to be filed

Jody Hoover, his wife, their two sons, and Mrs. Hoover's mother were in the house at the time.

    UPDATED Tuesday 10:44 p.m.

This story has a lot of you talking.

The 911 tapes are chilling and investigators say they prove the homeowner did the right thing.

"With the 911 tape it's very clear he had no choice at the time. He shot and he did show restraint. He warned the person not to come in, that he had a weapon, that he would use it repeatedly," says Commonwealths Attorney Joel Branscom.

Many who have commented on wdbj7.com agree.

One wrote, "I'm glad to see that in Botetourt County, at least, the second amendment is still alive and taken in the consideration it is supposed to be."

Another wrote "It scares me to think what would have happened the night if the homeowner did not have a gun. We may have been reading about a family of five killed."

But some feel the homeowner went too far.

One wrote "you have the right to defend yourself but would a shotgun blast to the knee stopped this man? We will never know because the home owner chose to kill him rather than stop him."

Another wrote "So let me get this clear. This guy kills a man in cold blood and NO charges will be pressed on him?"

Jody Hoover: "He busted through my back patio door and was coming into the house."

    Dispatch: "Ok."

Hoover: "and I shot two shots at him, in the chest."

Authorities believe the homeowner did all that he could.

"I can't argue with what he did cause he calls the sheriff's department, he waits on the Sheriff's department, he puts his family up, he warns the man repeatedly and then he waits as the glass breaks. He showed great restraint," says Branscom.

I'm sure these law abiding citizens - the Hoovers - did not go to bed that night thinking of killing someone.  However, when some unknown person unlawfully forces their way into your home, you can only imagine that they are coming in for one reason - and that is to harm you and your family.

Do you allow that to happen or do you protect your family and your home the best you can?  And if that means that someone dies in the outcome who should that be, the unlawful home intruder or a beloved family member?  Only you can answer that question!!

But why would you begrudge someone who protects his family from potential death?  That is something I can't quite understand.

My goal is to educate and encourage homeowners to protect their homes with a home security system, strong door locks, and build an impenetrable perimeter such that an intruder cannot get through without a lot of work.

With this type of protection set up if there is someone trying to force their way in, the homeowner can contact the local police - or his alarm company can do that immediately - while he gets his family into a safe room or gets his personal protection, e.g., firearm, stun gun, TASER.  Remember, most home invasion criminals do not break into homes carrying peeshooters - they usually come bearing firearms.

The home invasion intruder is the one at fault and must accept the consequences of his actions.  The second amendment says we have the right to protect and defend our homes and our family.  Home burglars/home invasion criminals need to understand that law-abiding citizens are tired of being victims of these crimes and are taking action!!

When you travel regularly for your job, either domestic or internationally, it is easy to stay “travel sharp” or “travel savvy.”   However, for those individuals who don’t travel as often, you definately need to know specifics to look for especially when going to another country.  If you aren’t well informed, some of these things can be harmful to you and your family if you aren’t “travel savvy.”
