California native Mélange Lavonne, an outspoken, openly lesbian hip-hop activist and artist whose song "Gay Bash" delves into the death of her best friend Kevin (fictional) at the hands of gay bashers. The video for the song opened for Queen Latifah’s movie “Life Support” in the 22nd London Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and has been screened in Germany, Australia, Spain, and most recently, the 2008 Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

Spoken Word Artist. www.Myspace.com/Rootsology I came to Georgia, I saw and I conquered poetry with a band when I met 3 guys Devon, Nebraska and Mike. Together, a band was born called A GROUP CALLED KARMA. We were rock, we were poetry, we were soul, we were jazz, we were ONE. Some called us Digable Planets and others called us Floetry. We could get into any studio and create a full CD of songs within 3 hours. That's including writing the poems out in a format and the band that played behind us was on point. That's how easy we flowed together! We came together years after Digable Planets and years before Floetry. We have 3 CD's that got so many great reviews not only from the masses but from several US Major Record Labels.

    ML Biography

California native Mélange Lavonne, an outspoken, openly lesbian hip-hop activist and artist whose song "Gay Bash" delves into the death of her best friend Kevin (fictional) at the hands of gay bashers. The video for the song opened for Queen Latifah’s movie “Life Support” in the 22nd London Gay &amp; Lesbian Film Festival, and has been screened in Germany, Australia, Spain, and most recently, the 2008 Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

Lavonne’s video was featured on MTV logo, quickly climbing the charts and voted on their music program as one of the best music videos of 2007. She is scheduled to release her second video called “I Got You” aka “Gay Parenting” on MTV in a couple months. “Its important to utilize my music in this political season, I fight for equality and human rights.”

Lavonne, who recently released her new album “The Movement”, brings all of herself — including her sexual orientation — to her music despite the fact that hip-hop is often experienced as misogynistic and homophobic. "I'm trying to get a message across, trying to spread awareness … about what I've endured and what my friends have gone through," said Lavonne, who has been the victim of anti-gay discrimination herself.

A cancer survivor overcoming Hodgkin’s disease at 12 years old, Lavonne does not let it slow her down, though. In addition to writing songs, dabbling in music production and touring nation wide, she's also done some acting staring in a TV Pilot called “Don’t Go” which is currently being shopped to networks as a television series. Lavonne’s new album is more personal; it expresses my creative side."

Her outspokenness definitely carries over to her music as well as her online blogs on her Myspace. Her song "Sick Sad World" decries racism, abuse, poverty, anorexia and prejudice. In "The Game," she exposes some of the problems of the hip-hop world, saying, "the music industry is a pimp and they see you as a ho."

“I truly believe I'm being utilized to relay a message of peace, tolerance, equality, understanding, unity, and most importantly, love."</b>

After my father tragically passed away, I fell into a depressed state. As a child at the age of 12, I put away childish things and grew up. My smiles even went away. The only thing that saved ME from ME was writing poems, songs and movies. Now, I am so thankful to GOD that I went down such a hard path in order to be who I am today. As an adult, I am still regaining my childhood back. 90% of the time ,I am enjoying life (cause there is humor in everything) and the other 10% is where I take things seriously. This is where I can relate to Michael Jackson more (remember the movie and what he said?.)

As a kid, I was extremely shy and my mom got me out of that real fast when she started putting me in talent shows, plays, church groups, organizations and things I couldn't pronounce. I was even a runner up with the Hal Jackson Talented Teens in New Orleans. I thought that I was too skinny and ridiculous looking to do any kind of pageants. I was wrong! After Hal Jackson Talented Teens, I was in many more pageants and more pageants after that. Every month I was doing something. Had my father been alive who was a saxophonist in a band and having my mom putting me in several things, I wouldn't have gotten into anything entertainment at all. The two of them, together, would have wore me out.
