I am a retired police dispatcher currently living in San Antonio TX. I grew up in Williamsburg VA and joined the US Army immediately after high school. I got to travel the Orient while stationed at Yongsan in Seoul Korea. My military job was Field Medic, yes the ones that go into combat although in Korea I was assigned to the 121st MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital). No, there was no one in my unit named Hawkeye, Radar or Hotlips. When I came back to the states I was stationed at Ft Lewis WA, as part of the 9th Infantry in a forward support battalion, which meant I spent my time doing one of two things. I was either on the base praying that Mt St Helens did not have another temper tantrum and blow her top and that Mt Rainier stayed sleeping. When not praying for the two volcanoes to keep a cork in it I was "camping" or at least Uncle Sam's version of it, usually in a desert somewhere. I also learned that American deserts where not limited to Death Valley and The Badlands, Yakima in Washington state was only a few hours away so they sent us there regularly, after all 9th infantry was the designated "Desert" unit at the time.
I also raised a beautiful daughter as a single parent. Sadly I lost her at the age of 18 to a car accident she was my only child. She was my little dancer she was a part of the Northwest Florida Ballet and danced in many of their performances so during that time I also added Ballet Mom to my list of achievements. I still support the arts as a volunteer to his very day.
After I finished my tour of duty I bounced around trying to find my niche. I've worked construction, as a hairdresser, candle maker, telephone answering service and finally found the best job in the world. I got paid to tell the cops where to go, sometimes that included going on calls but it was a very interesting and fun job. Being with the police dept is a big part of me being with PrePaid Legal Services, I got to see first hand how green the justice system is. I don't mean green as in saving the Earth, but green as in those with dollars got justice, those without didn't. My entire mission now is to help level that playing field for everyone. Each of us deserves the same level of fairness and consideration. Of course I also got to watch firsthand as the identity theft issue grew from an occasional crime to a full blown epidemic. A lot of my training as a dispatcher was in privacy and security to comply with FBI regulations on peoperly handling the very private, very sensitive information we had to deal with day in and day out. You would be surprised at just what comes up when an officer runs your driver's license. That training stood me in good stead when it came time to get My CITRMS designation.
The Certified Identity Theft Risk Management Specialist designation is given out by the Institute of Fraud Risk Management, the same people who certify public accountants. There's a lot of training involved in getting that designation. You have to know about identity theft in all of it's forms, how it happens, ways to guard against it. You also must know about the different laws pertaining to identity theft and privacy, finally you must study and know what the difference is between different types of identity theft products. After all that you still cannot get the designation until you have passed one of the hardest tests I've ever taken. Even the test to be certified to use the FBI's NCIC computer system was not that hard!
But now I want to add another chapter in my life story and that is helping others to share their stories. Many of us have interesting stories to share but no outlet to do it. That is what my show really is, a platform to provide everyone with a way to share their story.
