No stranger to the non-profit world, David Pena has served as the Advocacy Director/Lobbyist for the American Heart Association and subsequently a position as Executive Director for the National Hispanic Business Association. NHBA was a national non-profit created and based in Austin, Texas. As its first Executive Director, David transitioned NHBA from an undergraduate loosely joined association into the largest undergraduate association for Hispanics majoring in business. As a one-man operation and through his leadership, David doubled the number of chapters from 17 to 47 chapters across 16 states at universities like UT Austin, Harvard, UC Berkeley and Notre Dame. In 2009, Mr. Peña oversaw the transition and eventual merger of NHBA into ALPFA. He now serves as Senior Vice President of Programs at the national ALPFA offices in Los Angeles, California. ALPFA National is a member-based association for professionals and students in the areas of business, accounting, finance and related fields. The Association is comprised of 38 professional chapters across the country and over 80 student chapters at colleges and universities. In his new role, David oversees all professional and student member programs including ALPFA’s largest program, the National Convention which brings together over 2500 professionals and students. He is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of ALPFA’s current National initiatives and programs. Throughout his professional career David has sought to change lives, improve his community and make a broader difference. Along the way he has been afforded several titles and the ability to lead great organizations. However, it’s the impact of his personal achievements, education and financial independence, which have truly changed his life and influenced his constant drive to create opportunities for others. Make sure you tune in from 3 to 4 p.m. CST for this amazing interview with a Latino unsung hero.

An Intimate Look at Sheyla Morataya-Author, Motivational Speaker, and Life Coach

Sheyla Morataya-Fleishman is an author, motivator, and life coach specializing on the issues affecting Hispanic Women and their families. Having moved to the United States from her birthplace of El Salvador at the age of 31, she faced challenges that many recent arrivals have had to overcome. In developing as a mother, wife, and professional, she saw the need to help guide other women going through similar hurdles. This prompted her academic and professional career in studying the dynamics of women’s issues as well as family relations. She focuses particularly on the Hispanic Woman, but takes her extensive experience as a tool for all women and men to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the challenges they face. Sheyla is a testament to the success of the common person. She has risen from disadvantaged circumstances in a poor nation that offered her scant opportunities, and through the power of education managed to become a successful business woman.

Unsung Heroes/Heroines -One on One with Elementary School Principal, Ike Ramos

Latinos are blessed to have many actively engaged citizens, young and old, quietly and persistently working to better our community. Each Monday, I will interview a person who have had a positive impact on the community and have not been recognized for their work. These Latino/a figures have deep involvement in their town and whose leadership and service have had a beneficial impact on town life. They also think outside the box in their approach to solving social problems, work hard to make a difference, inspire others and do not call attention to themselves except as a way to garner attention for their causes. Beyond the sirens, the flicker of the flame, the roar of the engine and hiss of the mic, Latino/a unsung heroes/heroines are real people with hopes and dreams. Some are even volunteers who don't get a penny that willing give up their social lives to lend a helping hand to those in need. They are faceless men and women who are there to help and expect no recognition.
