Pilates (pronounced /p?'l??ti?z/) is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates in Germany.[1] As of 2005, there are 11 million people who practice the discipline regularly and 14,000 instructors in the United States. The Pilates program focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. As NIA practice promotes, "Through Movement We Find Health" for mental, physical and spiritual wellness. NIA (previously Non-Impact Aerobics, Neuromuscular Integrative Action) is a physical conditioning program based on a premise that movement is a pathway for self-discovery and personal transformation. Nia is intended to deliver cardiovascular aerobic exercise and whole-body conditioning. As a movement form, Nia Technique is based on 52 principles that integrate movement modalities from dance, martial arts, and healing practices. Nia blends nine movement forms.
