Safe and Natural Spray Recipes for Repelling Insects

Here are the recipes I mentioned in today's show:

    Roach Sprays

A bottle of soapy water to spray on them directly! If you have no animals or children, add a kick of 1-2 TB. of boric acid (commonly called Borax (a trademark name).
Clean the area thoroughly after killing the little suckers.
Avoid finger to face contact until you wash your hands.

    #2

    Catnip tea roach spray

1 oz of catnip fresh or dried
    1 cup of water.
Bring this mixture to a simmer, remove from the heat, strain and put in a spray bottle. Do not use if you have a cat! This is good for under appliances, under sinks and tubs and along baseboards. All natural and safe!

    #3

Use one or two cloves of garlic, 2TB. of cayenne pepper, one small white onion crushed up. Use the skins, too. Bring to a simmer in one quart of water and simmer for a couple of minutes. Remove from heat, cover and let it steep for at least one hour. Strain, put in spray bottle and use outdoors around doors, windows,  where the plumbing and air conditioning meet the home. Make a larger batch and pour it in an unbroken line around the perimeter of the home.

Tick repellents for animals and people

Only use essential oils in small drops, never directly on the skin without being diluted in oil first. Do not place essential oils on an animal's skin and never use essential oils internally.

Rose Geranium, Citrus oils, and Pennyroyal Oils can be added to 2T. of almond oil

Add 10 drops of each, shake well. This has a shelf life of 6 months in a darker place.

Use as a drop on the collar or on clothing

Do not use Pennyroyal if pregnant or pregnancy is suspected

    #2

Wash your animal with castile soap. For cats, you can simply use this remedy as a spray, skipping the bath part. A groomer can also wash your cat for you, as they know how to handle the pet.
Add 1/2 cup of rosemary - dried or fresh- and place in a quart of already boiling water. Take off the heat and steep for at least 20 minutes. Strain and allow to cool. Place in a spray bottle and liberally apply to the animal, massaging it into the skin. The rosemary is also beneficial for the skin.  Do not rub off the rosemary, allow the animal to 'air-dry'.

    Mosquito spray

Listerine (a trademarked brand) can be lightly diluted and put in a spray bottle to ward off mosquitoes. Spray every hour around your event.

Burn sage and rosemary on the BBQ coals or on the fire. Bayberry plants can also be burned. All create a smudge that keeps away bugs.
Lemongrass is a stronger repellent than pure citronella.

Infused sunflower and citrus oils (not extracts or essential oils) can be blended and put on the skin to repel flying, biting insects.

Plant marigolds in your yard, most bugs do not like the fragrance.

Next week, we are discussing repellents for more pests in Part Two.
Looking forward to hearing you call in:)

    blessings,
    lady gwyn
