U.S. Senate Candidate Darlene Fitzgerald Price (Dem)
on Mountain Top Removal (MTR):
As a native of our beautiful state of Kentucky, I am firmly against MTR because it is UNNECESSARY. Don't get me wrong - I'm not against coal as a short term solution and alternative to OPEC controlled oil. I just don't think it is smart to be tearing down our beautiful mountains in order to get the coal when we don't have to. You CAN get coal out of a mountain without destroying the mountain!!! Let's face it, the only reason that the coal corporations engage in MTR is because they can make a few extra dollars - but at what expense?
Let's not "rob Peter to pay Paul" so to speak. I know we need the coal jobs. But let's not trade our future jobs in the tourism industry for the short term coal jobs. Once you have extracted the coal from the mountain and have destroyed that mountain in the process, what you will have is a big pit coupled by all of its pollutants in our streams. The coal jobs will be long gone and we will have severely damaged our current and future tourism jobs. Tourism in this state is a multi-million dollar industry that will, hopefully, remain in the future long after coal.
I know "Big Coal's" canned answer to that is: "In the place of the Mountain, we'll build a mall!" I don't go to the country or to Colorado to see their malls. I go there to see their beautiful mountains and all the aesthetics that go with that. Tourists won't come to Kentucky and spend money to see a mall. They have their own malls in their own cities. They come here to ride horseback in the forest and hopefully get a glimpse of one of our black bears or deer. They come here to get away from malls and shopping centers.
Folks, this one is a "No Brainer" and the reason that I am the only candidate stating exactly where I stand on this issue is because I am the only candidate that has refused money from "Big Coal." If you want to know more about my platform and where I stand on the issues please visit my web site listed below. Oh, and by the way, the web site wasn't paid for by "The Bigs" either (Big Oil, Big Banks, Big Insurance & Big Pharma). I'm the only candidate that has refused BIG MONEY from these entities as well.
