As I take this break today, I have been thinking that I really should have taken a break on a weekend before school started back and the girls were out of town.

We opened the show with Pass The Peas by the JBs.

    It's back to school time!

This show is dedicated to the memory of Nate Quick who was on our sister station, KRNB. He died last week and a memorial service will be held at 10a.m. at IBOC.

    Jasmine, Bilal and Andrew
were here with their reports on news, health and black college sports.

    Joyce Ann Brown
spent almost a decade in prison for a crime she didn't commit and next year a movie will be made of her life.   Joyce joined me today to talk about  the movie that actor Brian Dennehy will be directing, about her life.  The working name of the movie is "Redemption."

November 3, marks 20 years since she was released and on November 7 there will be a celebration in her honor.  Mr. Dennehy is expected to be there.   As the chair of her 10th anniversary celebration, I will be there also.

As we talked about the innocent being imprisoned, I had to ask the question, "what happened to James Broadnax?"  He's the man who was sentenced to death for the murder of Stephen Swan and when Stephen's mother was telling how he had devastated her life, Mr. Broadnax laughed.

Next Harmona P. Epps of Grambling State Univerity, Darrell Davis of Prairie View A&M University and Lajun "Pete" Burks of Grambling joined me to talk about the HBCU Brunch on Saturday at 11am at the Hilton Lincoln Centre, 5410 LBJ Freeway.  For tickets, call 214-658-8303 or log on to
www.gsudallas.com.  Harmona said the Brunch will be a panel discussion on the State of the Black College.  Mr. Davis will be the moderator.

Darrell is a DEA forensic scientist and he wants to help bring forensic science programs into HBCUs.  Lajun is a head concierge for the Dallas Cowboys.  He played under Doug Williams at Grambling.

Dallas South will hold its open house on August 27
There will be a reception for Rochelle Brown on August 31
There will be a reception for Norma Adams Wade on September 15
The Omegas will be flipping pancakes at their Pancake Breakfast on November 7

Happy Birthday to actress Regina Taylor and Rep. Helen Giddings mother, who turned 86.

KKDA's Reporters Roundtable w/ Cheryl Smith, Shawn Williams (Dallas South), DFW/ABJ, Rochelle Brown

It's Sunday, August 16, 2009 and we're live in the studio.

The members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. are in town from all across the Southwest Region! Judge Maryellen Hicks spoke yesterday at the Social Action Luncheon.

Andrew, Bilal and Jasmine were here with the Sports, Health and News, respectively, and Juliette was producing.

The first guest today Shawn Williams, better known as Dallas South. He's been blogging for about three years and he recently launched a non-profit news organization. Check the site out at www.Dallassouthnews.org. Shawn says the focus is on southern Dallas where there are over 500,000 citizens and he will be "training citizens to do what I do." Shawn said he was reading a men's health magazine about three years ago and there was a section that talked about getting your message out by starting a blog. That was then and now, three years later Dallas South is like a stealth bomber, before you know it he is on the scene and taking care of business! The grand opening for the newsroom of Dallassouthnews.org will be at Southside on Lamar on August 27, at 6p.m. Dallassouthnews.org has an intern, Michael Counter.

This morning at 9:00 Shawn was scheduled to appear on Inside Politics on WFAA-TV 8, ranting about healthcare. The show is hosted by Brad Watson and usually Gromer Jeffers from the Dallas Morning News appears, as well.

Shawn said there will be a healthcare debate at a townhall meeting at CityPlace on Monday, August 17, with Congressmembers Eddie Bernice Johnson and Pete Sessions at 8:30a.m/ Tickets were needed for the event.

On the following Monday, August 24, Rep. E.B. Johnson will host a town hall meeting and Shawn will be the moderator.

Callers expressed their thoughts about former-now-returned professional football player, Michael Vick, who was released from prison after his conviction for torturing and murdering dogs. I gave Kudos for immediate past NABJ President Barbara Ciara for breaking the story that Mr. Vick had signed with Philadelphia.

Cynthia said he deserves a "second chance." She said the situation was racist.

Eva in the blogtalkradio chatroom said that people put more emphasis on the lives of animals versus humans.

Grace said Mr. Vick has been punished enough and we need to learn to forgive and forget.

Charles Ross said the situation was overblown.

Michael (not Vick) said white people value dogs lives more.

Greg said Mr. Vick deserves a chance

Randy said Mr. Vick has done his time and we need our own stations and media outlets.

Next, Ester Davis came on to talk about the tribute to Rochelle Brown that will be held on August 31 at 6p.m. at Harwood 609 Restaurant, 609 North Harwood in downtown Dallas. "We are saying thank you for 31 years at Fox," said Ester. Rochelle Brown and Insights have done so much over the years. She deserves our support.

    Announcements:

There will be a huge ESTATE SALE at 629 Canyon Place in DeSoto, (off Polk and Beltline) from 7:00a.m. until 7:00p.m. There will be plenty of books, clothes, furniture, shoes, school uniforms and more!
