Reporters Roundtable with Cheryl Smith, Live from Harwood 609 with Dick Gregory and Miles Jaye

We kept the Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon Weekend alive with the June 28 broadcast from Harwood 609, a beautiful restaurant/dinner club in downtown Dallas, with host Billy G and guests Dick Gregory and Miles Jaye. As I opened up the show, Miles got on the piano and tickled the Ivories as I talked to Mr. Gregory.

Of course talk about Michael Jackson’s death dominated the show, but we also talked about Paul Quinn College’s President Michael Sorrell appealing the SACS decision to strip the school’s accreditation.

We talked about the bowl-a-thon weekend and of course, I had to thank the sponsors: Hotel Indigo, Krispy Kreme, McDonald’s, Elite News, Break of Day Design, Clear Channel Outdoor, American Airlines, Dallas Weekly, Coke, Peaches Party Package (great caterers), Jabez, TXU, Lead, Comerica Bank, Harwood 609, African American Museum, Already Gear, Ntheknow.com, Black Business Directory, Dallas Examiner, Twilight Entertainment, Evans Engraving, 411 Sports, Golden Gate
Funeral Home, Black McDonald’s owners, UNCF, Friendship West Baptist Church, North Dallas Gazette and Paul Quinn College.

I talked about Channing Peoples who was the high female bowler and a 14-year-old, Ron, who bowled a 290, as the high male bowler. The high celebrity bowlers were Ken Bell of ABC Radio and Susy Solis of NBC 5.

My team came in third place(they would have come in first if I hadn’t been on the team!) and first place honors went to TXU. The second place team was made up of independents.

Next Miles explained the significance of the beautiful piano that sits in the front of Harwood 609 and we talked with Billy G about what the facility has to offer. In addition to hosting many organizations, the restaurant offers a $5.41 lunch on weekdays!

Entertainment includes local and national acts, which was also the case at his other restaurant/club, Billy G’s, which was located south of downtown.

Folks started showing up for the breakfast at Harwood 609 and I encouraged people to stop by after church and enjoy the wonderful Brunch Buffet.

Attorney DeMetris Sampson joined us and she shared information about Texas women supporting Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

    SHOUT OUT -

    - Juanita Benson, whose birthday is on July 1.
    - Judge Maryellen Hicks who is also doing her show live from Harwood 609 today.

    Until Next Time,

Wherever you go, whoever you talk to and whatever you do, DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!
