Reporters Roundtable with Cheryl Smith with Sgt. Preston Gilstrap of the National Black Police Assoc

Sunday, July 26 and I am broadcasting LIVE from Chicago where Kevin and Karen Fleming are celebrating their 50th birthdays. They were born in February (6) and January (22) respectively but they would have a hard time getting quite a few of us to travel to Chi-town during those months--especially the Elusive Ladies from the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and there were 9 of us in attendance!

Jasmine provided the news and Bilal was on hand with our health report.

The topic that sparked today’s discussion was the arrest of Harvard University Professor Dr. Henry Louis Gates who after returning from an overseas trip had a hard time getting into his home. Eventually he was able to get inside only to find the Cambridge, MA. police at his door because a neighbor called the police to report two suspicious looking Black men attempting to enter the house. Sgt. James Crowley was the lead officer arriving on the scene.
Sgt. Preston Gilstrap is a veteran with the Dallas Police Department and he says that he read the police report.
“I understand what vicariously happened because of my 37 years in law enforcement,” said Sgt. Gilstrap, who described in his own words what the report said. “Usually burglars don’t walk around with canes.”
According to Sgt. Gilstrap, who is the Past President of Texas Peace Officers Association and former Chairman of the Board of the National Black Police Association the situation could have been defused.
“Sgt. Crowley was being chastised by Dr. Gates,” explained Mr. Gilstrap, who added that the charge against Dr. Gates were scurrilous because “you can not disturb the peace” of a police officer. “Dr. Gates violated a law he was unaware of -- P O P or pissing off the police.”
Sgt. Gilstrap described Prof. Gates as a stalwart scholar and Sgt. Crowley as a hardnosed officer. The two were involved in a situation that involves perception and has caused an international furor. President Barack Obama, who spoke out on the issue, was also praised by Sgt. Gilstrap, who pointed out that the NBPA also issued a statement on the issue.
This subject will be discussed further during the NBPA National Education and Training Conference in Dallas, August 16-23 at the Fairmont Hotel. Veteran journalist Bob Ray Sanders, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, will provide the keynote address so it is sure to be exciting.
For more information about the conference, log on to www.blackpolice.org.

Next week, Reporters Roundtable will be broadcast LIVE from Harwood 609 and we’re inviting all HBCUs to come out. So far I have heard from Paul Quinn, FAMU, Prairie View A&M, Grambling, Southern, UNCF, Dallas Metroplex Council of Black Alumni Associations and I am still waiting to hear from all the other schools.

It’s mission is to “rebuild the walls of faith to students whose doors and gates have been closed; that no gap in their lives remain unfinished that have not yet been repaired.” The school goes from third grade to 12th and school begins on August 24th. The Grand Opening is on August 8, 10am-4pm at 103 East Beltline Road in Cedar Hill. For more information log on to www.nehemiahchristianacademy.org or call 972-293-6114 or 1-877-293-6113.

Karina Leon and Terri Woodruff from Krispy Kreme joined me to talk about the Blood Drive that will take place on August 1 at stores in Grapevine, Frisco, Plano, Fort Worth, Arlington and Dallas, from 7a.m. - noon. They hope to get at least 50 pints of blood. Karina and Terri said you can also register at www.e-donor.com.

Folks donating blood will get THREE donuts--one in the shape of a heart with 3 dots, because three lives are saved for every pint of blood given!

Everyone is also encouraged to bring non-perishable foods to any of the Krispy Kreme stores to benefit the North Texas Food Bank.

Krispy Kreme will also kick off its Back to School Drive, which will go through September.

"We're trying to get more involved in the community," said Karina.

Karina is the Asst. General Manager at the store located at 3521 N. Central Expressway in Plano.

We were joined by Jessica Byars, who is an alum of Paul Quinn College and public relations chair for the PQC National Alumni Association. Jessica talked about identifying alumni members and encouraging them to support the school. "We have to start at home," she said.

In addition to Paul Quinn Giving Day on August 1 on the college campus, alumni are working on a gospel concert for August 15.

At Jessica's 40th birthday party earlier this year, she raised $5500. She also talked about how she will be celebrating her 20th year as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and how important it is to keep the chapters alive on campus, by keeping the school alive.

To give to Paul Quinn, mail donations to 3837 Simpson Stuart Road, Dallas 75241.

The National Urban League is meeting in Chicago in two weeks. The Blue Notes will perform at the Urban League of Greater Dallas' Gala on August 22 at the Hilton Anatole.

August 1 is a busy day. Debra Brown and Vernell Sturns will be getting married!

I will be broadcasting live from Harwood 609 on August 2 and I am encouraging all alumni of HBCUs and organizations to join me.

Reporters Roundtable with Cheryl Smith with State Rep. Helen Giddings and Paul Quinn President Mike

Today’s show opened with State Representative Helen Giddings who said the Texas Legislative Black Caucus will be in Dallas tomorrow to hold meetings on Paul Quinn College’s campus and urge support of Dallas’ only historically Black College. “We are very concerned that the accrediting council denied Paul Quinn College. Legislators will be at Paul Quinn all day tomorrow, meeting with the President, the Board and community leaders,” she said.

Rep. Giddings went on to talk about the many changes that have occurred at the school and how Paul Quinn deserves support. She praised Paul Quinn College President Dr. Sorrell’s leadership and ability to address many of the concerns that the accrediting council raised.

President Sorrell also joined the conversation and talked about the work that is being done at the school

“We are trying to undo 15 years of neglect in two years,” he said.

Rep. Giddings said that Caucus Chair Sylvester Turner of Houston and several others will be in town, along with the Dallas Legislators. Sen. Rodney Ellis sent a letter because he is at the NAACP convention. She said they are also appealing to the community to get involved.

“It is crucial that Paul Quinn be accredited. We want to help Paul Quinn address the issues and meet the goals,” Rep. Giddings said. “They have made a lot of progress and we don’t want to ignore that.”

Hundreds of students have applied for admission to Paul Quinn and Mrs. Giddings said she “want to be sure that we don’t discourage the students that have applied for the Fall.”

Both guests said they were on their way to services at Friendship West Baptist Church with Pastor Frederick D. Haynes III. Mrs. Giddings is a member of St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church but because she did my show, she could not make it to their service.

Simultaneously with the airing of the show, several listeners joined me on blogtalkradio.com--the identifiable ones were Ocho, Ronny Krite and Mystic Politics. They commented on Paul Quinn and later I talked about my column in the Dallas Weekly. The column focused on people borrowing and not paying back! A few in the chat room had comments and Andrew said borrowers “think you don’t need the money as bas as they do.”

You can get my column by calling the Dallas Weekly at 214-428-8958 and get Caprice to send you a copy. I said that if someone owes you money, they don’t need to be concerned about whether or not you need the money. It’s yours. You can burn it if you desire, they should still pay it back!

On August 2nd, I will be broadcasting live from Harwood 609 and guess what, will be serving free breakfast!!!

I received information about the rally in Paris, Texas at the Lamar County Courthouse on July 21 at 10a.m., protesting the dragging death of Brandon McClelland by Charles Crostley and Shannon Finley. For more information, call 713- 261-3558.
