Reporters Roundtable with Cheryl Smith on KKDA, Sunday, May 3, 2009

Today is the birthday of James Brown.

The show opened with a song by James Brown, followed by the Health update from Bilal.  Andrew was not in with sports and Jasmine did not provide the news update, but we were rocking and rolling with my first guest, Jacqueline Williams-Hines.  Mrs. Williams-Hines is the mother of Joshua, and he is autistic.  She has written several children's books, featuring Joshua and she talked about how she first realized that Joshua was having issues with non-verbal communication.  April was National Autism Awareness Month and we agreed that this is a top we need to discuss more frequently.  Mrs. Williams-Hines talked about how she helped her son adjust and function at a level with his peers.  Find out more about her story at www.jacquelinewilliamshinesbooks.com.
Ty Washington from the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists Urban Journalism Workshop was there and we talked about their closing ceremony which was taking place later in the day at Lincoln High School
Next we talked with one of my former students, Jennifer Martin.  Jennifer works for the Promise House and they have a big golf tournament next week, on May 11 at Bent Tree Country Club and an exciting online auction at www.promisehouse.cmarket.com which runs through May 8.  Find out more at 214-941-8578.

On May 11-12, The Dallas/Fort Worth Minority Business Development Council hosts a expo at the Arlington Convention Center and director Margo Posey was in the studio, with her husband, to talk about how businesses can learn how to do business with major corporations.  She said that last year $286,000 in contracts were secured at the two-day event. Sen. Royce West will be hosting a session - "doing business Texas Style."  The Dallas/Fort Worth Minority Business Development Council has a lot to offer and they are committed to certifying, connecting and developing minority owned businesses.  For more information, call 214-630-0747, or check out www.dfwmbdc.com.
Next there was Annette Sears-Hutcherson and Sonya Bullard from Max International, who say they "encourage you to take care of yourself."  With their products, your energy level is increased  and it builds your immune system, according to Mrs. Sears-Hutcherson. Sonya says the Max products are especially good for aging women.you can find out more about their products at www.maximizeforlife.com, or call Annette at 214-558-1701 or email annettesears@sbcglobal.net.  She says they will be at Kwanzaafest in December and the Don't Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon on June 27.  And we know Bilal tries to keep us on point about doing things naturally and Annette and Sonya assured us that MAXGXL is made of natural products and will give you a better quality of life.
Finally we were joined by Roslyn Goodall of the North Texas Cluster of Links, Inc. and these women are doing phenomenal things.  On Tuesday night they will be screening an HBO special that focuses on Alzheimer's. The program is at the African American Museum at 6p.m. with a reception, screening and panel discussion, which I will lead. The Links have been involved with increasing awareness about Alzheimer's since 2006.  For more information call 972-248-8081.  I also pointed out that while you are at the Museum you can visit the George Washington Carver exhibit.
