Excellent show. More people need to pay attention to the waterside. The fish are in trouble. Check out www.sharks.org.

Liquid Lounge: Countdown to the Coral Reef Symposium

The show has an ocean focus, above and below the surface. Today, we'll talk about the International Year of the Reef and the Coral Reef Symposium, July 7 to 11, 2008.

  • Date / Time:

Liquid Lounge and the Coral Reef Symposium - July 7 to 11, 2008

Today's show will continue a series of updates on the International Year of the Reef and the Coral Reef Symposium, which begins in Broward County Convention Center/Fort Lauderdale, Florida in less than two weeks.

From 7 to 11 July 2008, this academic conference will focus the attention of more than 3000 people on the 'state of the reefs.' They will discuss Global Warming, Pollution, Over-fishing and strive for some plan of action, before people start to ask, 'Where's the Reef?'

The Coral Reef Symposium is the most significant of more than 100 ocean-oriented events that will take place around the world during the International Year of the Reef.

On 14 June, Wyland, perhaps the best-known marine artist in the world, completed his 99th Whaling Wall in North Lauderdale, Florida. The wall is 1000 feet long and depicts the connection between the marine life in the Everglades and the marine life in the ocean. Check out www.BlueGreenNetwork.com  for more information and a link to pictures and videos.

As part of Broward County's effort to reach residents, the Coral Reef Education Center will be open July 7, 8 and 9 in Hall A at the convention center. Local, national and international organizations will be represent among the booths, presentationa and demonstrations.

Other highlights of the Education Center will be 'Our Reefs: Caribbean Connections,' a traveling exhibit on coral reefs and the Wyland Clean Water Challenge.

WyLAND Whaling Wall 99 featured on Liquid Lounge with Ken English

The show went well. If you are interested in Wyland, and his Whaling Wall series, you will like this show. If you are unfamiliar with Wyland, check out www.Wyland.com and www.WylandFoundation.org.

There were a couple of audio clips I didn't have time for, so I'll visit with Guy Snell and Rich Kenney during a future show. Guy was the youngest of the participating artists. He's twelve and serves as a Youth Ambassador. It was his job to supervise the students who were visiting during the day. Rich is the developer of the wireless webcam system that was used - www.skyicam.com.

Check out www.BlueGreenNetwork.com for video clips of the wall that I have posted on YouTube.

Wyland left for Norway immediately following the dedication ceremony. He was the keynote speaker at a U.N. program in Stockholm. He's painting, what else, a seascape with some children, before heading to China, where WWW100 will be painted during the Summer Olympics.

Liquid Lounge: Live from the Whaling Wall of North Lauderdale, Florida

The first thing you will hear is the title track from Wyland Music's Rhythms of the Seas by the Earth Jazz Agents.

I was at the Whaling Wall in North Lauderdale, Florida.

It's a fascinating time for the city, one of only 100 locations in the world to have been chosen as a site for a Wyland Whaling Wall.

This is the 99th, and the last in one to be painted by Wyland in the United States. It's one of the most unique because it is not vertical, its horizontal. The wall is 1000 feet from east to west. It's 10 feet high. This Whaling Wall will have virtually every species of marine life represented. It represents the connection between the ocean and the
Everglades, the cycle of water and, consequently, life.

I was able to talk to Wyland and the City Manager of North Lauderdale, Richard Salla about the wall and the plan for the future. Frankly, I was surprised!

The wall is on a busy road, estimates of daily vehicle traffic top 50,000. It's McNab Road, just west of Rock Island Road. I thought the wall would end up being neglected, much like we do to the ocean. I was wrong! There is a plan. And, it's awesome...

Richard talked about about a pedistration walk, with lighting, landscaping and a webcam. From the base of the wall, a 'sea' of pavers, painted light blue, will create the illusion of water. Foliage will strive for an Everglades feel. Lighting will be used to enhance the visual impact, not just to illuminate the area. And, the webcam? It will show the wall to the world. It's a great idea.

You can check out the City of North Lauderdale's website - www.nlauderdale.org - for periodic updates. But if you want if you want to see the wall while Wyland works on it, visit www.wylandfoundation.org and click on the 'live cam' link.

For some YouTube videos I've posted, visit www.BlueGreenNetwork.com.

By the way, the show only 24 minutes. I didn't have anyone else to talk to, so I ended the show early to shoot video and take some pictures. And left.

As I did, I looked back to see Wyland swinging a spraygun to accent the contour of marine life. It was a humid, 90 degree day in South Florida. When he took a break, he was surrounded by adults who wanted him to sign autographs.

It's a lot of work to paint a 10,000 square-foot wall mural in 7 days.
