    French Fun: People

    Thanks for listening to our latest show! Here is some of the vocabulary we covered.

    mother = maman

    father = père (also papa!)

    brother = frère

    sister = sœur

    grandmother = grandmère

    grandfather = grandpère

    aunt = tante

    uncle = oncle

    daughter = fille

    son = fils

    boy cousin = cousin

    girl cousin = cousine

    my family = ma famille

    If Alex introduces me to his friend, Victor:

    Maman, je te présente Victor.

    Victor, je te présente ma maman.

    If Alex introduces his sister Eloise to his friend Marie:

    Marie, je te présente ma sœur Eloise.

    Eloise, je te présente Marie.

    If Alex introduces his Aunt Julie to his friend Jess:

    Tante Julie, je te présente Jess.

    Jess, je te présente ma tante Julie.

    Here’s how to say the titles of people you could meet in your neighborhood (men first, then women):

    Teacher = maître, maîtresse (these words are for teachers in preschools and elementary schools)

    mail carrier = facteur, facteuse

    police officer = policier, policière

    firefighter = pompier

    waiter = serveur

    waitress = serveuse

    doctor = docteur

    nurse = infirmier, infirmière

    dentist = dentiste

    pharmacist = pharmacien, pharmacienne

    librarian = bibliothécaire

    cashier = caissier, caissière

    neighbor = voisin, voisine

    singer = chanteur, chanteuse

    He is a fireman. = Il est pompier.

    (Notice we don’t say “a.” It’s like as if we were saying, “He is fireman.” Not, “He is ‘a’  fireman.”)

    She is a cashier. = Elle est caissière.

    I’m a doctor. Je suis docteur.

    Hope to see you next time!

    Thanks for listening,

    Kelly and Alex
