    mother = maman

    father = père (also papa!)

    brother = frère

    sister = sœur

    grandmother = grandmère

    grandfather = grandpère

    aunt = tante

    uncle = oncle

    daughter = fille

    son = fils

    boy cousin = cousin

    girl cousin = cousine

    my family = ma famille

     

    If Alex introduces me to his friend, Victor:

     

    Maman, je te présente Victor.

    Victor, je te présente ma maman.

     

    If Alex introduces his sister Eloise to his friend Marie:

     

    Marie, je te présente ma sœur Eloise.

    Eloise, je te présente Marie.

     

    If Alex introduces his Aunt Julie to his friend Jess:

    Here’s how to say the titles of people you could meet in your neighborhood (men first, then women):

     

    Teacher = maître, maîtresse (these words are for teachers in preschools and elementary schools)

    mail carrier = facteur, facteuse

    police officer = policier, policière

    firefighter = pompier

    waiter = serveur

    waitress = serveuse

    doctor = docteur

    nurse = infirmier, infirmière

    dentist = dentiste

    pharmacist = pharmacien, pharmacienne

    librarian = bibliothécaire

    cashier = caissier, caissière

    neighbor = voisin, voisine

    singer = chanteur, chanteuse

     

    He is a fireman. = Il est pompier.

    (Notice we don’t say “a.” It’s like as if we were saying, “He is fireman.” Not, “He is ‘a’  fireman.”)

     

    She is a cashier. = Elle est caissière.

     

    I’m a doctor. Je suis docteur.
