Promoting Self Worth is a Movement; "(Close Your Legs Open Your Mind 09)" speaks directly to an Urban society that has perpectuated a vicious cycle of a Broken Family Structure resulting from Promiscuity, Absentee Fatherhood, Depression &; Emotional/Psychological Abuse; stemming from Multigenerational Poverty. Who's to blame & where it started are Distractions that have kept us from resolving these issues. Racism is simply ignorance & fear mixed with a sense of misplaced Supremacy &; Entitlement. Education has become a commodity &; is now applied as a tool that uses access to Financial Resources as the wedge that separates members of various groups. Exposing these maladies and Early Intervention may be the only ways to galvanize the Black Family. This Intervention begins with Reprogramming the mindset early on. Kids ARE having sex very early in life now because of poor self esteem, lack of love & parental attention, & more importantly...The perception is that there is no alternative... What else can we Engage our Kids with that will be Provocative enough to keep their minds off SEX and the belief system that it equates to Love? Gang leaders & Pimps find easy prey in kids with little or no family structure. How can we communicate that Education is a direct correlation with one's ability to earn a living that will provide a desirable quality of life. Competing with the BLING circulated through mass media has to be countered and tempered with REALISTIC ATTAINABLE pathways to achievement. INROADS.org connects Minority College Students to Fortune 500 companies. The Affiliate Companies make a committment to hire, fairly compensate & develop these students into productive members of society. (THE PROGRAM IS UNDERFUNDED) Sylvan Learning Centers &; KUMON are resources available to the privileged. They are a supplement to help boost kids reading proficiency &; achieve mathematical competency. These programs also promote mastery around aptitude testing & retention of material. THIS NEEDS TO BE THE NORM IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR ALL STUDENTS REGARDLESS OF FAMILY MAKEUP (HOMELESS & FOSTER KIDS DESERVE A FIGHTING CHANCE AT NOT ONLY SURVIVAL BUT SUCCESS JUST AS STUDENTS WHO COME FROM "GOOD FAMILIES" BENEFIT FROM. Look at the travesty in review of Little Rock Central the High School that was Forcibly Segregated 51 years ago to allow Blacks to receive a higher quality education; Blacks there now take the opportunity for granted &; do not fully Benefit from the Resources made available. They are as many Inner City School Age Kids...DISTRACTED & are Trapped by their choices...We've got to change what options exist & begin to bring the water to the horse. WE CAN NO LONGER AFFORD OUR PRIDE. I'm proposing a CALL TO ACTION... for members of society who are wealthy to pool resources to help save our kids. Lots of the Professional Athletes have foundations which host Camps that help support kids in sports. Some touch on Academia too but I'd like to see us Focus almost exclusively for a sustained period of time on getting Entertainers, Athletes, & other Philianthropists to POOL DOLLARS TO FUND AN OUTREACH to ensure that kids are no longer "socially promoted" getting to 12th grade reading at the 5th grade level. Bush's No Child Left Behind DOES NOT work...Nancy Reagan's Just Say No only made us curious...Drugs have ruined our society. There is no quick fix. Get Rich Quick only happens for a few. Amasking & Retaining AFFLUENCE or WEALTH is very PROCESS INTENSE (Ask any Athlete, Entertainer or Lottery Winner)Ignorance around Tax avoidance yields jailtime & folks keeping their CREDIT in check is another battleground. There needs to be a resurrengence of RESPECT for Learning, & Hard Work needs to be Rewarded Financially. This Energy can fuel the future & will start to take the focus off SEX... Still, we must teach Etiquette on a broader level; & Home Ecomomics has become obsolete. FINANCIAL LITERACY has never even sufficiently been on the radar. The basic necessities that people need to know in order to run a household are being learned by trial and error. The error rate is so high that's it's prompted a general acceptance of FAILED FAMILIES...(The Baby Mama/Daddy)
I would like to see the Fed Funded program highlighted on CNN's Black In America which provides for the Mamas & Daddies to get counseling working through their personal issues, get educated, & get married...be REPLICATED IN EVERY STATE. (another CALL TO ACTION) Can't think of it all by myself... I want to hear your ideas & solutions to help launch Close Your Legs Open Your Mind 09...
