The biggest stumbling block in world building is weaving a concept into the timeline. Often, the biggest mistake a writer makes is accepting the real timeline for our world. They try to inject their concepts into an unchanged timeline and history is unforgiving.
Of course, creating an alternate timeline can be a daunting prospect and it can also be an uncomfortable intellectually to essentially erase events even in a work of fiction.
But if you really want to serve your concept, you must assess the timeline of the world your building and deal with the consequences of historical events in how they impact your goals your story.
