How Much Democracy Do We Really Have?

Democracy is a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation by way of “free elections.”  Are we the people presently able to actually exercise supreme power?  If financial resources are a major factor in determining the outcome of elections, are elections really free?
