We bought a mate, an English Budgerigar, which Jeanne named "Jinxie 1." From those two birds, we now have their 5th generation. We never considered buying nor raising Lovebirds, but we acquired a Peach-Cheeked Lovebird from a friend of ours who found the Lovebird along side the road. Jeanne named the Lovebird "Shyguy," because the bird would tuck his bill into its chest, like it was "shy." But over a year later, we discovered that "Shyguy" was a female, because Jeanne found an egg in the corner of the cage. Jeanne renamed the Lovebird "Shygirl." We figured that "Shygirl" was lonesome by herself in the big cage, so I finally convinced Jeanne to buy a male "Peach-Cheeked Lovebird on 5/31/2010. Jeanne named him "Toodles," and this baby Lovebird drove "Shygirl" crazy with his antics. Jeanne and taught "Shygirl" to climb the power cord on the portable fan which was mounted on the top of the medicine cabinet in Jeanne's bathroom. "Shygirl" in turn, taught "Toodles" to climb the power cord. It was cute to see "Shygirl" and "Toodles" perched on the top of the medicine cabinet. Much to our dismay, "Shygirl" died unexpectedly on Friday, 8/13/2010. On Monday, 8/16/2010 we drove across town to Southeast San Antonio to buy another Lovebird. Gary only had two Lovebirds, both of which we were told, were males. Jeanne bought a beautiful baby Orange Crested Lovebird and brought it home. "Toodles" began fighting with the new baby Lovebird, because "Toodles" took sole possession of the cage after "Shygirl" died. Finally, Jeanne took "Toodles" out of his cage and put him into a separate cage for a few days. When Jeanne put "Toodles" back into the cage with "Ira," Toodles" made up with "Ira," as they began to preen each other. Then Jeanne made a discovery" "Ira" was a female, so "Ira," named afer Ira Wagner, now became "Miss Ira." Both now climb the power cord together!00:15:00JR EnterprisesnoLovebird, medicine cabinet, bathroom, pwer cord, mateMy wife, Jeanne, and I started out with a dark gray Parakeet, which Jeanne named "Buddy." One day, Jeanne was talking with a friend in the front yard, and she had inadvertently left the front door to her apartment partially open. A neighbor's cat entered Jeanne's apartment through the open door and tried to swallow Jeanne's "Buddy"! The bird managed to stick her wing into the cat's open mouth, so that the cat could not swallow the bird. Jeanne arrived in time to chase the cat out of here apartment and to save her bird. After calming "Buddy" down, Jeanne put the bird back into her cage. "Buddy" did not emerge from her cage for several weeks, but each and every time that "Buddy" would come out of her cage, she would look around to make sure that there was no cat around! "Buddy" had a most peculiar way of descending from the top of her cage: she would go "headfirst" down the side of her cage. When Jeanne introduced me to "Buddy," Jeanne said that "Buddy" was a male. I took one look at the bird and knew immediately that "Buddy" was a girl! When Jeanne and I left for our honeymoon, we left "Buddy" with Jeanne's mother, who also had a Parakeet named "Buddy". When we returned to pick up Jeanne's "Buddy" we found out that Jeanne's "Buddy" had laid 2 eggs, and that forever solved the mystery! We bought "Miss Buddy" a mate, a handsome Cobalt Blue English Budgerigar with opaque white wings. "Miss Buddy" laid 8 eggs at the ripe old age of 10 years. 4 of the 8 eggs hatched, and we were blessed with a male American Budgie "Hybrid" which Jeanne named "Bud" after her father, and 2 female Albino White American Budgies. which Jeanne named "Marie" and "Lucy" after her mother and my mother respectively. AND THEN THERE WAS "WREN" who was a green & yellow male American Budgie and an accomplished escape artist, who enjoyed climbing up our living room curtains and looking down at us from the wooden curtain rod. We have Miss Buddy's great, great grandchildren! collapse 00:15:00JR Enterprisesnoparakeet, english budgerigar, american budgie, hybrid, albinoWhen Jeanne and I met again, after more than 26 years, she owned a dark gray Parakeet, named "Buddy." One of the most important considerations is where to buy your bird. Another important consideration is the proper size and safe bird cage. Another important consideration is the right kind of bird food, safe food cups and drinking water cups. I personally recommend stainless steel food and water cups. Yet another consideration is food and water additives to promote and safeguard the health and well being of your bird. Another consideration is how to safely clip your bird's "flight feathers," if you intend to work with your bird outside of its cage. Who and where is the best Avian Veterinarian? There are many licensed veterinarians, but the veterinarian may only have a rudimentary knowledge of birds. This almost seems trite, but how do you or how will you treat your bird, especially if your bird misbehaves? Never, never, never, scream at or hit your bird or throw it into a dark closet. I know that this seems trite, but not too long ago, these types of punishments were the "norm," that is to say, the most common approach to punishment! What about trips to the vet? Does your avian vet subscribe to "holistic" alternatives to prescription medications? Would you like to join a local Bird Club? How do you find and subscribe to popular Bird Magazines which offer important tips on treating, feeding and training your bird? All of these are important considerations, which if followed, will help make your bird your friend!00:15:00JR Enterprisesnobird basics, best place to buy a bird, safe cages and accessories, choosing a veterinarian, training and treating your birdThere are many things to consider when or before buying a bird. We did not become friends until the 10th grade. We used to play football with a paper football in the shape of a triange. The "goal posts" were our index fingers touching each other and our thumbs as the ends of the goal posts. We scored a "touchdown" if any edge of our paper football extended over the end of the table without the football's falling off the edge of the table. We sat on opposite sides of the table, and we had 3 "kicks" in which to move our football from our side of the table to our opponent's end of the table. I used to get my football to within 6 to eight inches of Jeanne's side of the cafeteria table, and then I would "kick" the football between her two index fingers and her two thumbs! I usually won, by using this tactic. We lost touch with each other after the 10th grade, when I transferred from Thomas Jefferson High School and moved across town and attended Thomas A. Edison High School. We met again in September of 1965, when Jeanne enrolled at San Antonio College from Thomas Jefferson, and I enrolled at San Antonio College from Thomas A. Edison. By this time she was seriously dating a neighbor boy who was a Junior Classman at St. Mary's University. I tried for 2 full years to get her to date me, but she was loyal to Rick, whom she married in 1970, after she graduated from San Antonio College in May of 1967 and then graduated from St. Joseph's (Catholic) Nursing School in Ft. Worth in May of 1969. After graduating from San Antonio College, I moved to Austin, Texas to attend the Uninversity of Texas, from which I graduated in May of 1970. I stayed in Austin untin 1975, when I transferred from a Finance Company in Austin to another branch of the Finance Company in Seguin, Texas. I eventually ended up in San Antonio, then in San Angelo.
