Quando os judeus regressaram do exílio, tinham perdido o uso público do hebraico, e falavam mais fluentemente o aramaico; como tinham as Escrituras em hebraico era preciso que alguém lhes transmitisse o real significado do texto. 
A palavra Targum  significa "interpretações". Os “Targuns” eram traduções livres ou paráfrases das Escrituras Hebraicas para o aramaico. 
Os targuns eram a princípio resumidos e simples, mas pouco a pouco tornaram-se aperfeiçoados até serem finalmente foram reduzidos a escrita. Um  targum é assim  um conjunto de traduções e comentários do Antigo Testamento em aramaico, feito durante o cativeiro na Babilónia, para os judeus que já não mais conheciam o hebraico

When the Jews returned from exile , had lost the public use of Hebrew , and spoke more fluent Aramaic , as had the Scriptures in Hebrew that someone had to convey to them the real meaning of the text. The word Targum means " interpretations ". The " Targums " were free translations or paraphrases of the Hebrew Scriptures into Aramaic .
The Targums were summarized and a simple principle , but gradually become perfected until they were finally reduced to writing. A Targum is thus a set of translations and commentaries of the Old Testament in Aramaic , made during the Babylonian captivity , the Jews who no longer knew Hebrew.
