Beginning on CTV in 1967 and running for 10 years, The Pig & Whistle was Canadian commercial television's first homegrown hit. Along with programs like Don Messer's Jubilee, Juliette and Stars on Ice, it was popular, family friendly variety, a genre that dominated the early days of Canadian entertainment television. Filmed on a set built to resemble a traditional English Pub, the series featured a variety of traditional Canadian, British and Irish music-hall style entertainment, including singing barmaid Kay Turner, leather-lunged host John Hewer and a studio audience bussed each week to a cavernous studio on the fringe of Toronto. The show delighted viewers with its unabashed Britishness, which set it apart from U.S. television programs. What made the Pig and Whistle special was the fact that its comfy setting of a neighborhood pub, where good friends could meet to share a laugh and a pint, was also a showcase for emerging Canadian talent such as the Irish Rovers, The Peaches and of course the Carlton Showband. Needless to say when I was approached to host a Pig and Whistle Tribute Series, with the objective of providing Canadian-based talent of a similar, yet modern genre with a venue that had long since vanished with the advent of Satellite TV and the emerging world of social media, I thought why not! So on November 28th I had the pleasure of attending a Pig and Whistle type pub to hear the musical sentiments of John Wright. Wright whose story and journey while being similar to many who leave their hearts exposed on the stage of previously unknown yet welcoming venues across the country, is nonetheless unique. Especially when he relates the story of using the guitar strap from a friend and fellow musician who once shared the stage with him but has since passed away. Well today, I am pleased to welcome John Wright to our show.

"But there I was, eating lunch at Saravana Bhavan in Sunnyvale (ahh, the things we endure on our spouses’ birthdays!) when I started noticing the t-shirts from local start-ups and NASDAQ 100 companies that stood out like a dense chain of barren, monochromatic islands among a colorful, undulating sea of saris. I wondered how many of these foreign-born tech-sters would still be here in one year’s time? Three years? Five years? Because in case you haven’t noticed, America is facing a brain drain unlike any in our history." The above excerpt is from a reader who was commenting on Brad Feld's October 21, 2009 Blog post (Feld Thoughts)titled "Startup Visa Stories." Tied to his September 10, 2009 post "The Founder's Visa Movement," Feld believes that “the US should grant permanent residency to anyone who graduates from a qualified four year university with a computer science degree.” The basis for his position is that "These are young, talented entrepreneurs that have come out of a three month program with amazingly interesting startups," that if successful will create "US based high tech jobs." Unfortunately, the process for acquiring the needed Visa is in Feld's words "expensive, risky, and tiresome, causing these budding, high caliber entrepreneurs to seriously consider "returning to their home countries to build their businesses." In today's segment of the PI Window on Business I am joined by Brad Feld to delve deeper into the question of granting "Founders" Visas, including why it is a program that would make sense as well as the obstacles to its realization.

Is The Canadian Government Bartering Away The Domestic SME Market?

Response to the recent Globe & Mail article (http://ping.fm/ixN2z) has been significant and diverse with some expressing concerns that Canadian businesses "will not be able to compete" with U.S. firms resulting in the "collapse" of domestic companies, and "our tax dollars going to another nation." This of course leads to the question, Is Canada Bartering Away The Domestic SME Market?" Joining us today will be a guest panel of experts who will attempt to answer this as well as other related questions on public sector procurement policy and its economic impact on business. Note: the phone lines will be open in the last half of the show to callers who can provide their perspectives. The PI Window on Business call-in number is 347-326-9234.

How to Argue Like Jesus: Learning Persuasion from History's Greatest Communicator

Even though the profession of one’s faith is sometimes frowned upon in the realms of the business world, my faith is as much a part of me as my receding hair line and expanding waist line – all by the way, the rewards of turning “50” this year. While the story in and of itself may very well have the makings for another book, my faith experience has seen me through the tumultuous journey from millionaire to pauper, and from abundant means to abundant need to a restoration based on hope and the confidence that the Good Lord has a plan for my life. In this journey I have come to recognize the fact that as Kenneth Boa wrote in his article titled Conflict Management, “conflict is a part of life.” Boa went on to write, “There is simply no getting away from this fact. As a leader, as a human being, you can be sure that you’ll face relational conflicts. No leadership model exists that will totally eliminate disagreements or clashes of personality. In fact, the tension that comes from conflict can be healthy and beneficial to growth if dealt with correctly. Since conflict is inevitable, it makes sense to manage versus avoid conflict. For this reason I am pleased to welcome as my guests today authors John Coleman and Joe Carter whose book "How to Argue Like Jesus: Learning Persuasion from History's Greatest Communicator," examines the life and words of Jesus and describes the various ways in which he sought-through the spoken word, his life, and his disciples-to reach others with his message. The authors then pull some very simple rhetorical lessons from Jesus' life that readers can use today. Both Christian and non-Christian leaders in just about any field can improve their ability to communicate effectively by studying the words and methods of history's greatest communicator.

The Emptoris Evolution: A Vision of Planned Continuity

As the business mainstream begins to look for new avenues of driving both efficiencies and savings in their supply chain practice, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) vendors are coming into their own as the only real alternative to the traditional, and largely ineffective ERP-based solution providers. This has prompted a migration of sorts for Tier One giants such as Oracle and Ariba, who now find themselves in the unenviable position of having to do what one senior executive called a complete DNA transformation of their corporate cultures to remain competitive in a rapidly changing marketplace. Whether or not they can successfully morph from the monolithic software architectures that have been the hallmark of failed initiatives usually costing clients 10s if not 100s of millions of dollars in the process, remains to be seen. On the other hand, the prospects for the true SaaS providers are infinitely better, as the solutions they offer are the epitome of streamlined, real-time adaptive efficiency. The added benefit, especially for the client, is that the SaaS pricing model is tied directly to usage versus implementation services and ongoing support. In short, and in line with the old writer's adage of publish or perish, the client only pays if they actually use the software. So the software better work, and work from the start. One of the future Titans of the SaaS world is Emptoris. Joining me to discus the exciting developments in both the company's comprehensive solution suite as well as its executive suite is Emptoris' VP of Marketing and Product Management Kevin Potts.

Spend Analysis versus Spend Intelligence: More Than a Semantical Difference

In a September 1st, 2006 article titled “Spend Intelligence: The Next Wave of Spend Analysis” the author made the following observation: “As corporate procurement organizations are charged with securing products and services of the best quality at the lowest possible cost, their enterprises are counting on them to be much more than just “order takers.” To accomplish that, procurement organizations must develop capabilities in spend intelligence. Spend intelligence takes spend analysis a step further. It enables the enterprise to take what it knows from the spend data it has gathered and use it to act on forward-thinking initiatives. In other words, spend intelligence provides actionable information.” While the above assessment of the differences between Spend Analysis and Spend Intelligence has its merits, there are still many within the mainstream of current thinking that disagree with its conclusions. Joining me today is an esteemed and diverse panel of experts to discuss and even debate the "apparent" differences between two trains of thought in which the implications extend beyond mere semantics. You Unstuck: Self-Empowerment versus Self-Help!

Everyone gets stuck; it's part of the human condition. Maybe you're stuck in your career, finances, health, or relationships; or maybe life dealt you a blow like a layoff or divorce. So, what are you going to do about it? This of course is how I opened our August 18th segment with Libby Gill, when I had the privilege of talking with her about her exciting and insightful new book “You Unstuck: Mastering the New Rules of Risk Taking at Work and in Life." With Libby’s book being officially released tomorrow in major bookstores across the country, she has taken time out of her 25 hour a day, 8 day a week schedule to once again join me to talk about “You Unstuck.” But this time we are going to delve deeper into the specifics of why we get stuck, and what we will need to do to take or re-take the helm of our lives with a renewed lens of understanding, and a greater sense of sustained purpose. In essence what we are talking about with “You Unstuck” is self-empowerment versus self-help, and a proactively energized attitude of what we can do versus acquiescing to the self-defeating “but look what has been done to us” mindset. Be sure to join me for what promises to be a thought provoking, action inducing 60 minutes.

Celebritize Yourself: How To Stand Up and Stand Out

"In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." This is a phrase that was coined by Andy Warhol in 1968, and even though some of us might not remember Warhol, his expression has certainly endured beyond even his own celebrity. What is prophetically interesting about Warhol's statement is that it was made long before the emergence of the Internet, and the explosion of social media platforms which provides anyone and everyone with a viable means to be seen and heard. However, in the globalized community of electronic interaction where yesterday's news happens within hours instead of days, mere exposure to a larger audience does not necessarily translate into the establishment of a sustainable presence or personal brand. Enter national radio show host, author and Public Relations genius Marsha Friedman whose new book "Celebritize Yourself" provides the insights and tools you will need to establish a sustaining brand in the ephemeral world of social media presence. Are you ready to Stand Up and Stand Out! Then join me as I welcome Marsha to the PI Window on Business Show here on the Blog Talk Radio Network.
