Beginning on CTV in 1967 and running for 10 years, The Pig & Whistle was Canadian commercial television's first homegrown hit. Along with programs like Don Messer's Jubilee, Juliette and Stars on Ice, it was popular, family friendly variety, a genre that dominated the early days of Canadian entertainment television. Filmed on a set built to resemble a traditional English Pub, the series featured a variety of traditional Canadian, British and Irish music-hall style entertainment, including singing barmaid Kay Turner, leather-lunged host John Hewer and a studio audience bussed each week to a cavernous studio on the fringe of Toronto. The show delighted viewers with its unabashed Britishness, which set it apart from U.S. television programs. What made the Pig and Whistle special was the fact that its comfy setting of a neighborhood pub, where good friends could meet to share a laugh and a pint, was also a showcase for emerging Canadian talent such as the Irish Rovers, The Peaches and of course the Carlton Showband. Needless to say when I was approached to host a Pig and Whistle Tribute Series, with the objective of providing Canadian-based talent of a similar, yet modern genre with a venue that had long since vanished with the advent of Satellite TV and the emerging world of social media, I thought why not! So on November 28th I had the pleasure of attending a Pig and Whistle type pub to hear the musical sentiments of John Wright. Wright whose story and journey while being similar to many who leave their hearts exposed on the stage of previously unknown yet welcoming venues across the country, is nonetheless unique. Especially when he relates the story of using the guitar strap from a friend and fellow musician who once shared the stage with him but has since passed away. Well today, I am pleased to welcome John Wright to our show.

"But there I was, eating lunch at Saravana Bhavan in Sunnyvale (ahh, the things we endure on our spouses’ birthdays!) when I started noticing the t-shirts from local start-ups and NASDAQ 100 companies that stood out like a dense chain of barren, monochromatic islands among a colorful, undulating sea of saris. I wondered how many of these foreign-born tech-sters would still be here in one year’s time? Three years? Five years? Because in case you haven’t noticed, America is facing a brain drain unlike any in our history." The above excerpt is from a reader who was commenting on Brad Feld's October 21, 2009 Blog post (Feld Thoughts)titled "Startup Visa Stories." Tied to his September 10, 2009 post "The Founder's Visa Movement," Feld believes that “the US should grant permanent residency to anyone who graduates from a qualified four year university with a computer science degree.” The basis for his position is that "These are young, talented entrepreneurs that have come out of a three month program with amazingly interesting startups," that if successful will create "US based high tech jobs." Unfortunately, the process for acquiring the needed Visa is in Feld's words "expensive, risky, and tiresome, causing these budding, high caliber entrepreneurs to seriously consider "returning to their home countries to build their businesses." In today's segment of the PI Window on Business I am joined by Brad Feld to delve deeper into the question of granting "Founders" Visas, including why it is a program that would make sense as well as the obstacles to its realization.

Social Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence: Not An Either "OR" Proposition

Over the summer I have had the opportunity to interview some amazing individuals dealing with timely topics that were insightful, thought provoking and even entertaining. While I have enjoyed every minute of each and every segment, the issue surrounding Social Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence is one that continues to fascinate me. This is especially true in key areas of everyday personal and professional life. A critical element that contributes to the "aptitude" one possesses relative to social and emotional intelligence is of course reflected in the ability to communicate. In today's show, I welcome Chief Paradigm Shifter and acclaimed author Bob Nicoll whose book "Remember The Ice and Other Paradigm Shifts" teaches you the how and why of enhancing your communication skills with family members, friends, co-workers -- anyone who is important to you.

I Believe This Will Interest You Also . . .

    W. Clement Stone sold papers as a kid. He became a billionaire by selling insurance door-to-door. He documented what he learned in his great book, The Success System That Never Fails. Picture this – you respond to a knock at your door. You open it to see a young man pointing to a list of names. You recognize quite a few of them – they’re your friends and neighbors. All this has happened within a split second as he begins to speak: “I believe this will interest you also.” He didn’t tell them his name or say, “Hello.” He didn’t ask them how they were doing or talk about the weather. No! He had tested … and tested … and tested. He knew this was his best opening line. It was part of his success system. The above excerpt from the Bigg Success, Life On Your Own Terms website (http://biggsuccess.com/) references the oft-quoted W. Clement Stone, and in particular his manner of establishing immediate creditability with an individual he was meeting for the first time. Without a doubt, the list of names Stone referenced was a compelling inducement that opened the door to further discussion and in Stone's case another sale on his road to business immortality. But what if his opportunity creating list of names was just that - a list of names? What if the people he referenced only possessed periphery knowledge of who he was or worse yet, allowed their names to be used even though their direct dealings with Stone was limited to a courteous exchange in town or a quid pro quo arrangement. Unfortunately, the above scenarios are indicative of a growing problem within the realms of social networking, where references or testimonials are bartered by an ever-expanding network of interloping relationships between name collectors versus relationship builders. On today’s show I welcome Inquisix’s Michael Kreppein to examine more closely the emergence of “reputation networks” and their effects on personal branding in the Web 2.0 world.

Beyond Business Intelligence Technology: The Importance of Domain Expertise

With my first book "Your Show Will Go Live in 5 Seconds" scheduled for release on November 2, 2009, one of the more daunting realizations I came to was the fact that there is an innumerable number of titles in what can only be referred to as the infinity of the publishing universe. The advent of social media, self-publishing platforms and highly accessible distribution channels has provided the means for almost anyone to become a "published author." Despite these "breakthroughs," the sustainable value of any book (and its enduring success) is still heavily dependent on the caliber of the content between the covers. In my case, the years of experience which has manifested itself in more than 350 papers and articles coupled with the opportunity to speak before audiences of up to 400 people has hopefully been translated into a book that represents a compelling, thought provoking read that will deliver valuable insight to its readers. I believe that it will. In much the same fashion that my experience has provided me with the ability to leverage the latest technological resources to publish a quality book, Oco's on-demand Business Intelligence (BI) solutions also extends beyond the technological breakthroughs associated with today's SaaS solutions. Solutions which provide buyers with access to the real-world, real-time data that enables them to make best result purchasing decisions at the transactional level, and are representative of the transformation of the somewhat static ERP spend management tools into the on-demand spend intelligence solutions that are necessary to effectively operate in a complex, globalized market. On today's segment "Beyond Business Intelligence Technology: The Importance of Domain Expertise" I will be welcoming Oco's CEO William (Bill) Copacino who has authored 3 books and more than 150 articles on supply chain management, to discuss the transformational changes that are redefining our understanding of Business Intelligence.

Managing the Process of Automation: Leveraging Capabilities Without Forfeiting Accountability

"It ain't easy leading a software company these days. Customers are sick of poor quality, inadequate security, old-fashioned business models, and pie-in-the-sky claims for trends like open source. They just want software that works. That was the message coming from customers, industry experts, and even some company executives at the Software 2005 conference last week in Santa Clara, California. from "Execs Tell Software Makers: Some of You Are Doomed," by David Kirkpatrick (May 6, 2005) Based on the above referenced results, many organizations are now turning to outsourcing their software development requirements to offshore companies from countries such as India. While there are many sound reasons for making the decision to outsource, they are not a Carte Blanche excuse for surrendering accountability for the project's success. Enter enterprise-requirements software providers like Blueprint who indicate that they can help companies maintain the delicate yet critical balance between outsourcing unique skill sets, without forfeiting the control that is necessary to ensure a cost effective, on-time end result. Joining me on today's program is Blueprint's Senior VP and CMO Matt Morgan from whom we will learn more about "visual requirement definition" as well as the myriad of other resources that are now available to organizations who want to gain access to needed resources without losing control of the development process.

Today's Care. Tomorrow's Cure. (The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation)

I can recall reading about Christopher Reeve's unfortunate accident shortly after it happened, and no longer thinking of him as an actor or a celebrity but instead as someone's son, husband and father. It made me think of when my own father had passed away, and friends and relatives came from far and wide to comfort our family in its time of sorrow. The flurry of activity leading up to and including the day of the funeral barely gave us enough time to reflect on our loss. And then the day after the funeral, when everyone inevitably returned to their everyday lives, I remember the void of loneliness that echoed through what was now a home with one of its most important members no longer there. I think that perhaps this was one of the loneliest times of my life. How much greater is that same loneliness for a celebrity or public figure whose heartbreak is followed by a vast world of strangers who themselves must also return to everyday living, and the next biggest headlines that capture the collective consciousness. It is precisely at that moment that a tremendous level of courage, determination and faith is required to move beyond the circumstances to ascend the stairs of misfortune to a greater life. To me personally, this is what the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation represents . . . the ascension to a greater life of possibilities and hope. In today's program we welcome Kelly Heneghan, Sandra Kumorowski from the Chicago Chapter of the Foundation, and Jon O'Connor who is the Founder and Director of NextSteps Chicago to talk about the services and the near horizon breakthroughs that the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is championing through its many programs and events.
