What would happen if every couple accumulated Frequent Foreplay Miles™ with the same enthusiasm as travelers collect frequent flier miles? It is an interesting question in that we all at some level, perhaps even sub-consciously keep score in our relationships. A kind of "Let's Make a Deal" Russian roulette in which the odds are ultimately stacked in the divorce lawyers favor. Given the fact that 50% of all marriages end in divorce, Shela Dean's bestselling book "Frequent Foreplay Miles: Your Ticket to Total Intimacy" channels what she refers to as "the human proclivity to keep score" in a "positive direction," by providing couples with a "common language with which to communicate." Joining me on today's show to discuss her book, and delve a little deeper into the key principles upon which the Frequent Foreplay Miles concept has been based is Shela Dean.

Winston Churchill is someone for whom I had and have a great deal of admiration. From the determined "Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense," to "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts," I am to this day moved by the heart and drive of a person who like all of us, is a fallible human being. Yet it is in this very fallibility, and the challenges of his "black dog" that author and psychiatrist Anthony Storr wrote of Churchill: "Had he been a stable and equable man, he could never have inspired the nation. In 1940, when all the odds were against Britain, a leader of sober judgment might well have concluded that we were finished." In his new book “Against Happiness,” Wake Forest University professor Eric Wilson asks whether we are trying too hard to be happy, and whether over medication is draining our culture of the melancholy that historically gave rise to many great artists and writers. Does the quest to numb ourselves to the point of blissful ambivalence and avoid the reality of the full range of our emotions somehow deprive us of the very drive that propels us to overcome and ultimately attain real happiness? I can only shudder to think where we would be if Winston Churchill had made the decision to mute his "divine discontent." To explore this controversial and thought-provoking subject, I am pleased to welcome Eric Wilson to today's show.

We Have to Start Meeting Like This: The Power of Virtual Conferencing

In the recent PI Window on Business* broadcast “The Psychology of Social Networking” we asked the question, is L.J. Hanifan’s 1916 definition regarding social networking a reflection of its true intent that is best achieved or realized through a face-to-face interaction, or does our current technology driven mediums, while lacking in the realm of up front and personal contact, deliver greater business and social value to what has become a global community? It was a very interesting 60 minutes to be certain. And while the guidelines for building an on-line network of quality contacts and relationships certainly exists in this new world of digitized interaction, I do not believe that anyone would or even could dispute the sustaining value of an up front and personal “interface” with one’s clients or fellow professionals. That said the reality of a tough economy and the resulting budgetary adjustments that have led to either scaled down events or outright cancellations is still a factor. However, and despite current economic conditions, conferences and seminars will continue to play an important role in the way we meet, share ideas and ultimately form long lasting, mutually beneficial relationships. In today's segment I am pleased to welcome Whistletree founder Ed McKee to discuss the rapidly expanding playing field of virtual conferencing providers.

The Virginia Legislative Review of eVA Call-In Show

As a follow-up to our July 16th show in which I reviewed the key findings from the Virginian Legislative assessment of the Commonwealth's web-based procurement system's impact on Small Business, we are today opening the lines so that you can discuss (and even debate) this seminal briefing with other members of the listening audience. As you know eVA has been recognized as the beacon of efficient and effective public sector procurement practice. This has been based largely on the tremendous growth in both the number of registered (active) suppliers, as well as the corresponding increase in the distribution of Commonwealth contracts over the entire supply base. What are your thoughts relative to the insights that have now been provided to substantiate the fact that with eVA the Commonwealth's procurement program is heading in the right direction? The call-in number is 347-326-9234. I look forward to taking your call.

The Gathering Storm: How LinkedIn Policy Might Be Alienating Its Power Connectors

LinkedIn's policies seems to be a topic that is gaining considerable traction in social media circles for a variety of reasons including what the network's Power Connectors are referring to as the unreasonable imposition of arbitrary contact limits While I do not dispute LinkedIn's rights to set guidelines and rules for their network, the absence of providing a reason for their decisions is problematic. Especially since a clear response would remove the discussion from the realms of speculation. It would also help new and developing members to decide if LinkedIn is in fact the platform upon which they would want to build their social media presence. My concern of course is that a lack of communication has the potential odor of a bait and switch. Specifically make access initially easy and once you are in you are stuck. A factor that is even more troubling if you have built a considerable network. For example, what if you have built a conversational relationship that leads to steady flow of business and LinkedIn decides that the $24.95 per month no longer supports their business model? Are we then left with a silver or lead proposition? A question we need to ask of all social networks, because we are ultimately going to get to the point of dependence. Joining me to discuss the implications of this and other social network questions is author and social media maven Neal Schaffer, whose first book "Windmill Networking: Understanding, Leveraging & Maximizing LinkedIn" is scheduled for release in August, 2009. If you have an opinion, we invite you to call in at 347-326-9234.

    SOX and Contingent Workforce Management

In 2005, The Human Capital Institute released a paper titled "The Impact of Sarbanes-Oxley on the Contingent Workforce." At the time, the paper stressed that SOX "presents a significant problem for any business due to the expertise and level of detail required to meet compliance." The paper went on to state that the response for most organizations was to "turn to a contingent workforce," that offered the "needed expertise and resources" to manage compliance thereby enabling the company to "avoid disrupting the regular flow of work." However, and according to industry reports, issues such as co-employment or rebadging (re outsourcing) has created its "own set of concerns" relative to SOX compliance as well as other aspects of managing the contingent workforce acquisition process. This includes the fact that an organization's responsibility relative to compliance extends beyond itself to include its suppliers. Joining me to discuss recent developments in the world of contingent workforce engagement is Jeff Nugent from CWS Solutions. Jeff is an authority on contract workforce strategies and is a much sought after speaker and consultant to many fortune 1000 companies.

Know Me Like Me Follow Me: Your Business and Social Media

If you think simply having a presence in social media will help you grow your business, you are wrong. Online networks are the new model for creating connections, so you'd better start by ditching your old ways of thinking. Being online is not about the technology - it is about the people. Technology is just the enabler. Forming deep relationships and being part of a community where you get out what you put in, lies at the heart of understanding this developing medium. In the new book "Know Me, Like Me, Follow Me," Ecademy founders Penny and Thomas Power take you on a journey into the online business world. A world in which Ecademy having started out on the shared belief that there must be a better way for business people to meet, connect and help one another solve problems and expand their businesses, has today grown to a membership of more than a quarter of a million, spanning over 200 countries. Know Me, Like Me, Follow Me will refresh your thinking and help you truly understand the business opportunities that exist within social media, and how best to exploit them. Whether you are a multinational or an owner-manager, developing your online brand in the right way is key to making the most of the new business environment. And for this reason alone, today's show promises to be equally refreshing and insightful with the lines being opened to caller questions and comments.

The JLARC Review: Phantom Echoes of Discontent?

In March (2009) I received an unexpected call from from the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Chief Legislative Analyst requesting my feedback or perspective on House Joint Resolution No. 119. The resolution which was agreed to (or passed if that is the right terminology) by both the Commonwealth’s Senate and the House of Delegates in early March 2008, directed the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee (JLARC) to study the impact of eVirginia (eVA) on small businesses in the Commonwealth. Today's segment of the PI Window on Business Show will focus on the JLARC legislative review process and resulting paper (which is scheduled for release on July 13th). During the show, I will be accepting calls from all sides of this important issue. NOTE: There is still time to cast your vote in the PI Window on Business Poll that asks the question "Is Virginia's eVA program a benefit to SME/minority & women-owned suppliers." Here is the link: http://polls.linkedin.com/p/33171/dkdqa In the meantime, here is the link to the five part series I wrote on the JLARC Review for the Procurement Insights Blog (http://procureinsights.wordpress.com/?s=JLARC).

Death Before The Eulogy And Other Myths of Public Speaking

“According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.” Looking beyond Jerry Seinfeld's humorous anecdote, a recent gallop poll found that 40% of adults have a fear of public speaking. According to CTRN, while each of the 1,300 "listed" phobias presents their own degree of difficulty and inconvenience, for someone in business the "Fear of public speaking can cripple your career, since it's almost impossible to be successful in business without speaking to a large group at some point." In this segment of the PI Window on Business Show we welcome New York Times Bestselling author Dr. Larina Kase whose book "The Confident Speaker" has been praised as being "the single finest book" on the subject of overcoming the fear of speaking to successfully project a strong persona to every audience member. Also joining our discussion is professional humorist Sally Edwards, whose one-woman presentation “Laughing All the Way Home" focuses on making her audience the stars of the show. Regardless of whether you are a beginner that has just been assigned the task of giving a presentation to fellow workers, or a seasoned pro from the lecture circuit, this segment will engage, entertain and empower you in your continuing evolution to becoming a more effective public communicator.
