It’s hard to believe that members of Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, actually believe in the free market system anymore. The problem with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mack was that they took on debt that would normally have been too risky had they not had an implicit backing by the Federal government. Stated simply, government intrusion into the free market mortgage system was the reason for the downfalls of these two organizations as well as banks and Wall Street firms. Or is there more to it?
