At 15, Matt was an honors student and captain of his high school football team when he robbed a bank with a BB gun. He spent four year incarcerated in the Texas juvenile justice system, during which time he was able to earn his GED and high school diploma, and took college courses. Even though it was his first offense, in many states his crime would have resulted in an automatic adult sentence. Because he stayed in the juvenile system, Matt was able to turn his life around and get the chance to audition for American Idol. Vic had been charged as an adult at the age of 14 and was serving time in jail before his eventual release on probation. At that time, Sarah Morris was running the workshops, working as a Criminal Justice Fellow through the AFSC. Later, Sarah became the head of an independent program designed to continue the project as a youth-led initiative. Today both Victor and Sarah work together as the co-coordinators of YASP, based in Philadelphia, PA. They have joined us to talk about the evolution of the project – from empowerment workshops, training youth leaders and providing opportunity to formerly incarcerated youth to building a youth-led political movement. Today they’ll speak to the fight they are waging, and the youth they are empowering. Since 1996, Rocha was wrongfully convicted of a 1996 murder in California. Rocha, then 16, was accused of opening fire at the party where a high school student was killed and another man injured. Rocha was tried as an adult and sentenced to 35 years to life in prison. Two others were also convicted. Rocha was incarcerated for 10 years, during which he said he was stabbed twice by fellow prison inmates. He was released on bail in August 2006 after an appeals court decided that his original trial attorney failed to adequately represent him.
