Overhaul in Ohio: A talk with attorneys Kim Brooks Tandy and Al Gerhardstein on the case against DYS

Sweeping changes to the juvenile justice system are taking place in Ohio, thanks to a federal class action first filed as a compliant against the Ohio Department of Youth Services in 2004 and resulting in a settlement in May 2008. Joining us are Kim Brooks Tandy, the Executive Director and Founder of The Children’s Law Center, Inc. and Al Gerhardstein, a civil rights attorney and President and Founder of the Ohio Justice and Policy Center. Both served as members of the co-counsel in the case representing all the children who are or will be placed in Ohio’s DYS custody. The provisions of the 2008 settlement included widespread reform, from an overhaul of the “culture” of DYS facilities to major changes in release practices. Please join us as our guests elaborate on their case for reform and speak to the changes, challenges and promise that await Ohio’s juvenile system.

Interview with Lola Reyes, Asaeli Matelau and Isaac Giron, organizers of the FACE Movement

The FACE Movement is an advocacy group based in Salt Lake City, Utah that has mobilized itself to improve the conditions of oppressed people within their community. The Movement is against adult trials, sentencing and incarceration for juveniles in Utah, which allows for juveniles who commit certain crimes to be automatically certified as adults. Joining us today are Lola Reyes, Asaeli Matelau and Isaac Giron who are core members of the FACE Movement. Lola Reyes is an activist from SLC Utah, co-chair of Movimiento Estandiantil Chicana/no de Aztlan (Mecha) and is also involved with the SLC Autonomous Brown Berets, a community civil rights organization that advocates against the discrimination of people of color. Asaeli Matelau is a youth advocate who utilizes personal stories of youth who have encountered the adult justice system to campaign for the empowerment of youth. Isaac Giron is a founding member of the SLC Autonomous Brown Berets, a community organizer and anti-war activist. He is an outspoken fighter against police brutality against youth, and for the rights of immigrants and people of color. The FACE Movement aims to bring awareness to the consequences of the juvenile certification process that tries children as adults, a trend that disproportionately affects minority communities. The FACE Movement advocates for providing opportunities for juvenile offenders, rather than punitive sentencing in adult prisons and recently started a mentoring program. Be sure to join us!

Building a Movement: The Youth Art & Self Empowerment Project in Philadelphia, PA

When Victor Saez was first introduced to the Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project (YASP), he was a participant in a series of weekly workshops for incarcerated youth in the Philadelphia Jail. Vic had been charged as an adult at the age of 14 and was serving time in jail before his eventual release on probation. At that time, Sarah Morris was running the workshops, working as a Criminal Justice Fellow through the AFSC. Later, Sarah became the head of an independent program designed to continue the project as a youth-led initiative. Today both Victor and Sarah work together as the co-coordinators of YASP, based in Philadelphia, PA. They have joined us to talk about the evolution of the project – from empowerment workshops, training youth leaders and providing opportunity to formerly incarcerated youth to building a youth-led political movement. Today they’ll speak to the fight they are waging, and the youth they are empowering. Please join us.
