He received his first trumpet as a gift from his uncle at the age of 10 and quickly rose to notoriety as the youngest member of the Brass Institute under the tutelage of Major Edouard Wade. Adding drums and percussion to his skills, Charles went on the road with his father, also a professional musician. Eventually enrolling on a scholarship at the Florida State University, coming under the influence of the distinguished pianist and teacher Marcus Roberts, he graduated as the College of Music Brautlecht Scholar with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. In 2005, he placed 2nd in the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition in Bangkok, Thailand and performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Netherlands. In 2006 he placed 1st in the National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax, Virginia. In 2006, he released his debut album Culture Shock to outstanding reviews from around the country. And in 2009, he released his second album Folklore. Join us Fri, Mar 18th at 2pm when we discuss his upcoming projects and his highly anticipated visit to Harrisburg PA (my center of the universe!) just days following our interview!
