Today's guest exemplifies living in GOODNESS! Charmaine Hunter is known as an astute educator, talented choreographer, director, manager, motivator, extraordinary dancer and producer. Born in Jamaica, West Indies, at the age of nine, Charmaine moved to the United States for a better life. The family settled in Hartford, Connecticut and there she began her dreams. She began her formal dance training at the Hartford Ballet School. After a year of intense classical training Charmaine moved to New York to study with founder Arthur Mitchell of the Dance Theatre of Harlem while continuing her formal education at the Professional Children’s School. Her teachers included Karel Shook, Alvin Ailey, Suzanne Farrell, Tanaquil LeClerque, Carmen DeLavellade, Mary Hinkson, and William Griffith just to name a few. She rose through the ranks quickly from apprentice to corp-de-ballet eventually becoming principal dancer and one of the company’s ballerinas. She electrified audiences with her performances in a broad spectrum of roles. She is best known for her role as The Firebird choreographed by John Taras and Medea, choreographed by Michael Smuin. During her 25 year career with this world renowned company, she had opportunities to affect the arts in the country particularly for African Americans. She has served as guest artist for several companies in the U.S., and Europe.
