For this episode, Barbara Jean and Ann broadcast live from the 3rd Annual Footy Regatta Design & Competition in Bellevue, Washington, taking place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Pool. The two-boat match race drew a sizeable crowd of seasoned professionals and students alike as the 12-in vessels traversed the waters of the pool, showing off the skill of the skippers.
This was the closing even of the SNAME Annual Meeting, and we thought it was a great way to wrap up a wonderful week of technical papers and presentations that for the most part concerned craft at the other end of the size spectrum. For more about SNAME (The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers) and information about careers in naval architecture and marine engineering, we encourage you to visit www.SNAME.org.
Here's the official description of the Footy Design Competition:
The Footy Design Competition is designed to give budding designers a chance to design build and operate a real vessel quickly and cheaply and to be able to feed back lessons learned from all phase of the project in a finite time for the modification or development of the next generation design. Teaching design to naval architects, marine and ocean engineers is challenging and it is believed that this Footy design, build and race competition may provide a useful tool in the teaching of design processes, feed-back, construction trade-offs and operational performance and enhancements.
