"And now for something completely different."

Our guest today will be unlike any other we have spoken with. Whitney Phillips earned her Ph.D. in Digital Culture with a Folklore emphasis from the University of Oregon. She spent five years mingling among online trolls, studying their behavior, analyzing their interactions, and coming up with some interesting conclusions about their significance to our modern world. Considering the genesis of our own site, we think this is a fascinating discussion to be having. Ms. Phillips has a wicked and finely honed sense of humor, so you will want to tune in this evening.

Although the topic of trolls may not have anything directly to do with sports, trolls do certainly infect the world of sports talk, and thus they are a concern to us all. Moreover, there are certain parallels between the behavior of trolls online and the asocial and hostile behaviors unruly fans sometimes exhibit in the stands or at bars. Perhaps, too, we can draw parallels between the misbehavior of players on and off the field and the disruptive influence that trolls can have in our online communities. Ms. Phillips will give us a sneak preview into her upcoming project that will involve the antisocial actions of fans.
