On May 14, 1948, the day before the end of the British Mandate, the Jewish Agency proclaimed independence, naming the country Israel. The following day five Arab countries — Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq — invaded Israel, launching the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. - - - - - During the 1940s throughout the Middle East approximately 1 million Jews were forcibly evicted, in the process having land (much of it farmed by Jews for 100s if not 1000s of years) totalling more than 38,600 square miles stolen from them (in addition to money and other assets also sized).
