Don't be afraid to PUNCH THROUGH

You want to know one of the most HORRIFYING things about pushing your way to success?  It's when you get to that point where you are ALMOST there!! That point is scary as hell!

You don't understand?  Ok, follow me on this one.  When you're driving towards to a goal, your mission is solely on that goal.  While you're working to get to that point, you're used to be in the trenches.  You're grinding away.  Making new relationships.  Fine tuning your craft.  Trying out different options and opportunities.  You're doing everything you need to do.  You're fighting your battles.  You take a loss here and there.  You lick your wounds and you keep on fighting.

Then one day, it finally happens.  You get that opportunity.  It's the one that you have struggling, pushing, and scrapping your BUTT off for and now it's here.  You deserve it. You earned it.  You fought for it.  It's yours!

Then, it happens!!  You pull back a bit!  SAY WHAT???? What the hell are you pulling back for now??  You are a warrior.  You fought for this moment! This moment is YOURS!   It's time to make it 'STOP', 'DROP' and "POP LOCK" BABY!!

The problem is the wounds!!  You've been beat down so many times.  You've have so many "GREAT OPPORTUNITIES" thrown your way that turned out to be nothing.  You've had to 'pick yourself up' after being thrown to the waist side.  You've been used and taken advantage of on more than one occasion.  You're just at the point where you're just NOT sure if this is it.  So many times, you've told yourself that you would know when you've reached your goal but after getting burned a few times, you just don't know anymore.

Well, STOP, pulling back the reigns.   Part of the reason you got THIS far is because you weren't afraid to jump into the fire.  You weren't afraid to "PUNCH THROUGH" when you thought you had hit the jack pot.  The simple fact of the matter is, there really is no magical "I HAVE ARRIVED" moment.  It just doesn't happen.   The "POT of GOLD" is not at the end of the rainbow.  It's when you start following the rainbow because you weren't afraid to get outside and walk in the rain.

There are COUNTLESS stories of individuals who push and kept pushing until they got to where they are.  If you keep chipping away at the wall,  don't worry if you can't put a hole in the wall.  After chipping away, the wall will fall down on its own!

Remember this: You can FOLLOW another person's example, but you must LEAD down your own path

Sometimes, in the course of trying to BE like someone else, we lose sight of who we are.  It can get tough when you see so many worthwhile role models who's path or history seems to mirror our own lives.  We look to those persons for guidance.  We look to those persons for inspiration.  And, in the ultimate form of flattery, we mimic their movements and decisions as we use those actions as the map towards our own success.

Unfortunately, what we sometimes forget is that THOSE things are just guides or references or examples of what OTHERS have done to get to THEIR destination.  These actions does not necessarily have to be yours.

Now, listen, I'm not saying that you shouldn't follow these actions.  Alot of us have mentors that we turn to for guidance and direction.  Their words of wisdom and the wealth of their experiences can be a valuable source to help you make the decisions you need to make in your life.

But don't lose sight of who YOU are in the process.  You are the one that is special and will make a path for yourself.

For all of you out there (and you won't like that I say this but listen to HOW I say it), there will NEVER be the Next BARACK OBAMA or the next DONALD TRUMP or the the next OPRAH WINFREY or the next CAROLINE KENNEDY!  More importantly, there SHOULD NEVER be a NEXT Barack or Caroline or Oprah or Donald!  The only thing that should be is the FIRST YOU!

Before you start calling me a HATER, listen to how I am saying what I say.  When people ask me "Are you proud that Barack Obama is President?".  My response is "I'm happy that he is president but I'm prouder of how he Became President".  He did it in a very unique way.  His campaign was grass roots.  He catered the small money as opposed to the big money.  His way was different (and this isn't a political point so i'm not going to address the fact that it helped that we are in a tight economy and funky time).  My point is that he did it very unique.

Sometimes, we spend so much time wanting to be LIKE someone else, we lose sight of the fundamental UNIQUENESS of ourselves.  We get upset because we are made to feel like we SHOULD be doing something like someone else.  We are made to feel insecure if we don't KNOW the people we are supposed to know.  We kick ourselves when others have walked a similar path and we don't understand why we are not as far along as they are.

Unfortunately, the answer is quite simple.  In our haste to BELIEVE we have to do what someone else did to get to a particular point, we forget about the UNIQUENESS of ourselves.

For years, I have trained in a very special form of Martial Arts called  UPKUDO.  No, it's not UPKUDO Karate, it's just UPKUDO.  The U (between K and DO)  stands for "Unique".  One of the many lessons that my teacher has shared me is the importance of being "Unique".  In her words, she would always say "so many times, people spend so much energy focusing on copying on one someone else is doing or getting mad at themselves if they CAN'T do what someone is doing.  The simple fact is the one thing that gives us an edge over the next person is that there is literally only ONE of you.  So focus on finding out what works for you and NOT what you can DUPLICATE from someone else."

Don't think that I'm special because I have on MANY OCCASIONS kicked myself because I've looked at my friends situations and wondered why I'm not further along.  I've gotten angry because I questioned my own decisions in light of my career.  I've qondered whether I'm doing what I"m supposed to do.

Then, after a few fun filled conversations with friends and family, I realized ONE powerful point.  I am exactly where I'm supposed to be, doing what I'm supposed to be doing, which will in turn, take me where I am supposed to go.

Remember, it's ok to look to another person's actions, choices, and opportunities as a guide for you but DON'T try to duplicate THEIR path.  They already HAVE their castle.  You're trying to get yours.

    WORLD AIDS DAY

As we take the opportunity to bring to light this devastating condition, I want to take the time to reach out on behalf of a worthwhile organization.  I am very proud to be a Board Member for the MIRACLE OF LOVE, INC. (http://www.miracleofloveinc.org).  This organization is a 501c3 Federally Tax Exempt Organization committed to providing services, outreach, and prevention to persons affected with HIV in the Central Florida.  What makes this organization MORE unique is that it's primary focus is on those affected in the African American and Hispanic American communities.

It is tough out there for organizations like these who spend countless hours doing work in these communities but receive very little fanfare.  While it's wonderful that some groups have the added advantage of having big name celebrities like Sheryl Lee Ralph to promote their interest, the bottom line is that most of these organizations are fighting in the trenches to keep their organizations relevant and visible.

As we look back on DECEMBER 1, 2008, take a moment to do what you can contribute to organizations that are doing to the difficult labor of providing a resource for those afflicted with this devastating condition.  And if you have some great ideas that have worked in your areas, please share.   Just remembers, no matter how big or strong the soldiers may be, they all need to rest some time.
