cause students were not academically motivated. And although I've been extremely lucky to have attached myself to a group of like minded folks, many minority students do/can not find or connect to such groups, which is one reason why retention rates for minority groups at many PWIs are laughable. What we need for all our colleges (both PWI and HBCU) is a marriage of the supportive, caring environment of the HBCU with the academically challenging and rigorous climate of the PWI.

Hi Tony, I am currently a second-year master's level student at a PWI (the University of Minnesota), but I got my start at an HBCU (Morris College). As I reflect back on my experiences at both types of institutions, I think each has something to learn from the other. My experiene at an HBCU was coddling to say the least. The professors were extremely nice and caring and went the extra mile to help students achieve success, but they often lowered academic standards and disregarded deadlines be
