During this episode Classic will interview yet another great indie rock band..The Spies! Los Angeles based band, The Spies have been perfecting their brand of indie-pop for five years. With two self-released albums (Old Ghosts 2007 and Televolution 2009), two music videos, one national tour, and multiple song placements in Film and TV (CW, FOX, ABC) the band has been building a very loyal fan base since 2006. Conceived as collaboration between longtime friends, The Spies have evolved into much more as their career has progressed. In 2001 and 2002 respectively, Mark Matkevich and Leo Francis moved from their native Philadelphia to Los Angeles to pursue acting, music, and warmer weather. The two decided to start a new project together and immediately began collaborating on all new material. In late 2005, after months of playing out as a two-piece (Mark on keys, Leo on guitars) in small venues and coffee shops, the two began to look for a permanent bass player. Shortly thereafter, Adrian Barrio auditioned for the band. Adrian’s driving melodic bass-lines became a backbone of the band’s sound, and with the addition of Dylan Giagni's unrelenting and aggressive style of drumming, The Spies completed their signature sound. With the band’s live show in top form, The Spies are constantly winning over new fans with infectiously catchy rock performed at high-intensity. The music they create pays homage to their influences while still sounding completely original. It has its’ roots in blues and rock and roll, weaving them together in melodic lines that make the music feel almost familiar and easily relatable. The Spies’ music “will please fans of rootsy-rockers like, Wilco and Elvis Costello” and the band “…range from ultimate Pop/Rock dynamos to melancholy wordsmiths and back.” With new music and plenty of new shows on the horizon, it’s a good time to become a fan of The Spies.
