Hello, my name is Amber. I am 30 years old and I am a stay at home mom of two. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with P.C.O.S. and diabetes all in the same week! My Dr. had no real answers for me as to what P.C.O.S. i...s or how MUCH it affects you! She said that the medication I am taking for diabetes would HELP with my P.C.O.S. In what way I am not sure! She also said exercise will help BUT and I quote; “This is an uphill battle you will NOT win!” I was devastated, and rightfully so. I was at a point in my life, where I was two years from thirty and the dream to be thin and healthy had just flown out the window. I felt this was it; I should just quit trying and find a way to be happy with myself. Now convincing me of this was not entirely easy, but let’s face it my Dr. said there was no hope, so there was no hope I had finally accepted that this was my life so I should just deal with it! Amber has decided it's time to do something about her PCOS and she's going to share her journey with you. Tune in as she introduces all of us to her world. Then follow her on our blog after that, as she updates us with the ins and outs and ups and downs of PCOS management. I'm looking forward to learning tons from Amber and hope you join us! 00:30:00incyst1noPCOS,inCYST,diet,nutrition,exerciseDoes this sound familiar? Hello, my name is Amber. Make this the year you change how you celebrate. ... Green Halloween isa non-profit community initiative to create a healthier more Earth-friendly Halloween, and the sponsor for the upcoming Los Angeles Costume Swap. Alivia Hunter, Jackie Carter, and their fellow Green Halloween volunteers are involved with Los Angeles Costume Swap as a way to create a healthier environment - kids and the Earth. Partners are the Mar Vista Farmers Market and Mar Vista Community Council as well as National Costume Swap Day™, a partnership of Green Halloween® Swap.com and Kiwi magazine.   "Halloween has become a junk-infested holiday plagued with throwaway costumes clogging our landfills, and known more as a candy bowl menace threatening our children’s long-term well-being. Los Angeles is on the list for 50 of the least healthy cities in the nation" Some facts: *Since the 1980’s, the number obese children has more than tripled. *35 percent of Americans have expectations for companies to make and sell environmentally responsible products and services during the economic downturn. *A 2003 Yale University study found that nearly half of 284 young trick-or-theaters picked a small toy over candy when given the choice. *Swapping half the costumes kids wear at Halloween would reduce annual landfill waste by 6, 250 tons; equal to the weight of 2500 midsize cars. Janet and Alivia will be providing details about the September 18th costume swap drop off day and the actual October 9 Costume Swap, both at the Mar Vista Farmer's Market.   00:30:00incyst1nohalloween,environment,sustainability,mar vista, los angelesHave you ever considered, between the candy and the throw away costumes, how unhealthy for you and the planet Halloween as we know it really is? Many dietitians entered the field because of a personal experience with nutrition and health. inCYST's first intern, Sarah Jones, will talk about what brought her into the field, what it takes to earn a degree in nutrition, what she likes, as well as what surprises her about her chosen career. Sarah Jones is a northern California native who grew up in a small town in Sonoma Country nestled in the heart of wine country. Upon graduating from high school, she worked full-time for various law offices and attended college in the evenings taking general education courses. In 2000, she moved to southern California and was employed as an office manager for an accident reconstruction-engineering firm. At age 27, she decided to quit working entirely and return to college as a full-time student, though she had not yet determined what major she would pursue. She initially began her journey toward returning to college in southern California, but after one semester moved to Phoenix, Arizona to live with her future husband and attend Phoenix College and later Arizona State University. After two semesters back in college, she discovered the field of Dietetics. Healthy eating had been a way of life for her for many years and after taking one nutrition class, she was hooked. Her path to studying nutrition began with her own journey of healing with food, and she now incorporates her knowledge of nutrition with Yoga. In 2009, Sarah obtained her 200-hour Yoga instructor certification through At One Yoga in Scottsdale, Arizona, and currently is a substitute instructor at Metta Community Yoga in Phoenix. She believes that the mind and body connection is essential for good eating and healthy living habits. Sarah plans to graduate in December 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics. 01:00:00incyst1nopcos,dietitian,yoga,student,internYou've become inspired with what your PCOS has taught you about nutrition and you're thinking about turning it into a career... ...it's not uncommon! Since July of 2009 Christine has been a full-time artist working primarily in cast concrete. In the art-making process, using all environmentally...-safe and responsible materials is something that she has become passionate about in recent years. During her career while working for an environmental-building firm, she reviewed information and research data on environmental chemicals [toxins] used in our everyday products. As she learned more of the staggering statistics about the health effects these chemicals and waste have on our planet and on our bodies, she was convinced that change started with her [and you]. She did the homework and found alternative solutions for both materials and studio practices. Many mediums she had used for years were given up: all resins, oil paints, solvents, lacquers and petroleum-based materials. As a result – many new mediums were found such as, soy-based sealers, concrete casting, natural earth pigments, clay-based paints and a whole host of recycled materials. This new exploration of medium has changed the direction of her work significantly and brought a new layer of underlying content into the works as she continues to create an ongoing dialogue of visual elements that explore ideas related to human behavior and environmental adaptation. 01:00:00incyst1noPCOS,Christine Cassano, art, toxic materials,inCYSTPhoenix-based artist will be sharing her story about how her health and her passion for art have intertwined.
