Fern Schumer Chapman is my guest for the full hour. She joins me to talk about her latest in a series of books recounting the experiences her mother, Edith Westerfeld Schumer, had coming to the United States as a 12-year-old Jewish girl from Germany during the Nazi occupation.
Her mother had long wanted to be re-united with another refugee whom she met on the ship she travelled on so long ago, when her parents said, "Goodbye," so their daughter could survive.
Chapman's third story came to fruition with the help of a 8th grade classroom from Madison Junior High. in Naperville. They read Chapman's novel, "Is it Night or Day?" and wanted to kow what hapened to Edith's childhoodfriend, Gerda. The third book captures that story.
