Creativity Consultant Nellie Jacobs chats with Fran Schwartz, Pianist, Lecturer, Teacher, Cruise Enrichment Speaker, Arts Volunteer. Theme-Creative Innovation. By the age of four, she could identify each musical note and had perfect pitch. She was a child protégé who loved her piano lessons. When she abruptly quit as a teen, her music teacher cried. In this interview, Fran shares details of growing up with music, why she stopped playing, what she's done in the years since and the circuitous road she took to return to music and a musical career. (Here's a hint: she kept in touch with her extraordinary piano teacher until the woman died recently at the age of 102.) Fran discusses her views about the downside of exposing children to too many extra curricular activities, the quality of education and learning today, the epiphany that led her to leave a very brief fulltime public school teaching career and how she creatively forged an innovative thriving career combining elements of her education, experiences, interests and talents. We also have the added pleasure of listening to excerpts of Fran's piano-playing taken from her CD Encore: Favorite Classics. Fran is currently Vice President and Program Chair of a Philadelphia Orchestra volunteer committee, serves on the Boards of two chapters of PA Music Teachers Association and for a considerable period of time was active in a group called Art Goes to School that brings art into elementary schools.

Episode 9-Marlene Walker: The Curiosity Factor

Nellie Jacobs interviews Marlene Walker, Author. Nature Photographer. Newspaper Columnist. Property Manager. Nature Retreat Host. Public Speaker. The title of this profile is ample evidence of Marlene Walker's diverse interests and wide-ranging career. An excellent example of someone with an enormous Curiosity Factor, Marlene traces her life-long interest in both nature and learning back to when, at the age of three, she noticed nine bluebirds sitting on a telephone pole in her friend's backyard. She has been feeding her curiosity since then. Every person she meets, every conversation she has and every experience she encounters fuel the personal and professional directions she takes. Marlene has two Master's degrees, the first in Social Work and the second, in Zoology with her research focused on genetics and birdsong. Early in her career, she worked as a social worker and then as a private consultant. She loves to share her knowledge and is now into her tenth year as 'Nature Walk' columnist for the Muskoka Sun newspaper. She has self-published and vigorously marketed volumes I and II of her books entitled Muskoka Nature Walks. Marlene is an avid biker, skier, adventurer and nature-lover. She now runs spring and fall week-end nature and photography retreats in Muskoka. If you are interested to find out more information or receive mailings of her upcoming 2009 retreats, email naturewalke@rogers.com. In this interview, Marlene will share details of the winding road she has taken. She will answer questions such as: Why is she never bored? What course did she take when pregnant with her firstborn, and why? What does she take along with her wherever she goes? What inspires her? Who has motivated her? Why did she self-publish and what did she learn along the way? What role does intuition play in her life? What happens when she "puts it out there?" Listen in while Marlene also offers 10 tips and suggestions to create success. Website: www.marlenewalker.com.
