Charles Cannon is a son of the South who ventured into the unknown and unlikely world of European living.  As a child in Greensboro Alabama it wasn't something that he could imagine in his wildest dreams. He was introduced to music early in life...when he joined the St Paul Baptist Church's childrens choir.  This led to him attending an Arts School in Greensboro which focused on developing young talented musicians.  His training at the school was primarily focused on classical music.  Throughout his development he had no experience with popular music which clearly changed later on in his life

In the early sixties, he was caught up in the passion of the civil rights movement in Alabama and became an active member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee under the tutilage of Stokley Carmichael.  Then, in the summer of 1966, he received a notice from Uncle Sam which indicated that he had been drafted into the United States Army and needed to report for duty.  Charlie chose to avoid Viet Nam by volunteering to serve and got an assignment to a permanent station in Italy.

In 1967, he was walking along the main street of the base in Vicenza humming a song when suddenly he was stopped by a soldier that was passing by who asked "hey man, do you sing?"  Charlie replied..."a little." And, that was the beginning of his joining a group of guys who ultimately became The Kents.
