I would like to talk about ways to treat ADHD without medication. With the recent reports that ADHD medications are not producing longer-term benefits; this is a “hot topic” for many families throughout our country. My latest book released on Dec 1. 2012: Parenting Your Child with ADHD: A No-nonsense Guide for Nurturing Self-reliance and Cooperation (New Harbinger Publications). Our interview can help parents reduce their child’s ADHD behavior and strengthen his or her capacity to self-manage. In line with your show, my intervention helps to rewire the child's brain. The therapy works on the premise that ADHD behaviors increase in frequency due to reinforcement. Close examination of the child’s day-to-day patterning shows that the behaviors occur in particular situations and repeat in relation to what happens. It can be exciting for parents to learn that they can alter the consequences that increase the incidence of ADHD behavior. Our show segment can help parents recognize the five main ways in which they may have unwittingly reinforced ADHD behavior in the past. It can inform them about the ten parenting principles that regulate emotions and foster caring relationships. Far from encouraging parents to strictly manage their child, the treatment promotes independence in kids so that less stringency and surveillance is necessary.
