In the article I wrote for THE FUTURIST magazine the word UNSUCCESSFULLY is between Tried and Destroy. From the first month when I began teaching in Los Angeles in 1959 it was obvious that there was little difference between being controlled by the hierarchy in the Air Force and the COMMAND and CONTROL model that controlled everything in education. You hear about "teacher proofing" by those who have little faith in the ability of teachers to have the legal power to listen to, observe, develop a relationship with each student, and then find ways to best teach him and her. Unfortunately, being made to feel inadequate, most teachers buy into the belief that their failure to get the best from each student is based mostly on the believed inabilities of the students and the equally erroneous idea that bad parenting is the main problem. By challenging almost everything that wasn't working I gradually developed a means of teaching and effective control that I call the Self-Sustaining Classroom. How to do it is in my book THE COMPLETE TEACHER. Today I'll share some of the highlights of my path to my self organizing system that included constant feedback and sharing of power with students and their parents.
