After growing up in Southern NJ (just outside of Philadelphia), I went to the College of William & Mary where I graduated in 1983 with a degree in philosophy. It’s worth noting that the sum total of my formal business education was a single semester of accounting in my junior year. During the last 2 summers of college, I worked with my father who had a life insurance practice (in the basement of our house) and was beginning to explore the world of employee benefits. Literally 2 days after my graduation, I went to work alongside him and one part-time secretary, beginning what later became known as RSI. My father retired a few years later, and over the ensuing 27 years, I led RSI to become one of the largest, and most successful independently-owned benefits firms in the country. We grew revenue and profits at an average rate of 20% per year, and won numerous awards along the way. Seven times we were named as one of the Best Places to Work in the region, we were selected as one of the Finest Companies in NJ, we won leadership and customer service awards, and in 2006 we won the NJ Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence – the highest award for quality available in the state. In 2008, with more than 100 employees and over $16 million in annual revenue, I sold RSI to Arthur J. Gallagher & Associates, a large, publicly-held insurance broker, and in 2010, at the age of 49, I retired from the industry to pursue other passions.
