I am definitely a change agent. I have been a family therapist for 38 years working with families and their children with disabilities, helping the whole family change from the negative way they function to become an accepting well functioning family. I have worked with hundreds of children.
I understand this process , because I have been a mother of a child with cerebral palsy for almost that long. Our daughter died in 1970 at 14, and her life and death inspired me to work with this population. I have won many awards and am listed in the Congressional Record. In a family with a child with disability, there many problems that exist in addition to the regular family's problems, to name a few. The marital union is key to helping the children adjust in the family. The siblings are often left out and the child with the disability usually becomes the focus in the family, thereby shifting the balance of the family. The family is not aware of their interactions. The family is so involved in their misery and overly involved with disability, that it is most common to see a high divorce rate in families of children with disability. I have helped so many families understand these problems in therapy, and have helped them change. Many marriages have been saved as a result of their learning and changing their interactions. I am a change agent for sure!
