Dr. Gene Stephens has taught about leadership, criminal justice, futures, and youth-at-risk for the past four decades and has also written about these topics throughout this period. His most recent article on youth was in The Futurist and suggested ways to "save" the millions of youth at risk across the globe. One major suggestion was that the United States join the rest of the world in accepting an international convention guaranteeing the right of every child to protection and basic human rights. The U.S. is one of only two countries in the world that has not signed this Convention.More recently, Dr. Stephens has held that in the U.S. and numerous other countries hit hard by recession, another major problem--failure to provide a
21st Century education for all children--threatens to put even more children at risk of becoming dysfunctional adults in a rapidly changing global economy which demands creative and critical thinking skills for survival. The real long-term solution to the problem sounds simply, but has proven difficult: provide every child with unconditional love and positive attention, including
caring discipline. stephens-gene@sc.rr.com
