It's Valentine's Week on "Hybrid Jazz" - and I believe that we have some ULTIMATE meanings in that regard - in the way of guests :)

Ragan Whiteside, the beautiful Lady on the Flute, is with us on Thursday, 2/13.  Our very next interview, however, is with the enchanting Offiong Bassey. Singer, songwriter, producer and poet, this young woman is the first of her Nigerian family to be born in the USA.  Her Grandmother was an early inspiration...Offiong would hear her sing traditional songs in her native tongue.  As well, there was the joy of discovering Angelique Kidjo, Jonathan Butler, Fela Kuti and - American based - Lauryn Hill.

This beautiful and multi-talented artist views her life as a blessing.  And she takes her name quite seriously: it means "God's Moon" in her family's language.  It is Offiong's mission to shine the light of that moon in all that she does, including the music on her new project.

Self-titled, you'll hear a combination of genres in this thought-provoking and strongly spiritual album.  Ms. Bassey conjures a whole new image of HYBRID, for sure!  African, Gospel, Jazz, Soul and Funk.  More if you seek it!  She has stated that the songs "have been marinating for a long time." So the message is important for her to convey - you can feel it.  One of the interesting features about song content is this: what you may think is a subject that is romantically based is actually a song about the relationship that Offiong has with God.  And she even has a powerful point to make in another work - about ASSUMING that we know the story - even when we don't have all of the information.

Wise beyond her years, Offiong Bassey conjures an old soul in new and refreshing sounds.  It's the "right time and season" for her - you will agree when you hear her voice :)
